Hi there,
Me and my wife are considering to move to the island of Peng Chau. My wife works in Sham Shui Po however, so we expect some travel time every day. But that set aside, anyone here has experience with living there? Are the ferries often out of service coz of typhoon? Is it really inconvenient living on an island like peng chau or cheung chau? Would like to hear some opinions about practical things.. problems, suggestions, advantages..

it is just a nonsense idea. travelling everyday at least 1,5 hours. where in ssp is a ferrie pier? ferry very often out of service due rainstorm warnings, typhoons etc., mosquitos on this islands will be your best friends. no good food selection in the shops, dirty restaurants. better you post this question in some backpacker forum rather in a buisness poeple forum.
think and wake up boy.
btw. how long you are in hk already?

You make it sound like it's hell on earth. We know about the travel time (we timed it at 1 hour if you dont miss the ferry). I was more talking about practical things about living there. We have been to Peng Chau a couple of times.
I have been in HK for a total of 6 months now during 10 visits. I dont see however why this would be relevant.

wife and i would LOVE to live one one of the islands but just impractical re school journey for the kids. Maybe in a few years time....
Don't know Peng Chau that well but out of interest why are you looking there rather than the more 'established' islands such as Lamma etc. Might give the people here a better idea of what the attraction is for you and if the 'hassle' factor is worth it.
btw - you need to take Mango with a v.big pinch of salt.

it is important how long you are in hk, as you with your short stay here still have maybe some romantic feeling when you travel to the islands with your wife or gf/bf, which will get lost very soon when you have to travel to your island of choice two times every day. (not every day, as you many times will check into a hotel during rainy season and the ferry is canceled.) [:x)]

Hey Alex,
feel free to ignore mango...
When a typhoon is approaching all ferry services are disrupted, you normally have about 2 hours warning (sometimes less) to get a ferry back to the outlying islands. Peng/Cheung Chau ferries can be infrequent on occasion, and stop before midnight. Will your wife be working is a school? I ask because schools often have to stay open until the last minute for kids to be collected which might delay her departure in the event of a poor weather - just a thought.
If you did happen to miss the last ferry (expect in typhoons) you could try and hire a boat (water taxi) that will at least get you back to the island - expensive not something you would do everyday.
Another choice might be worth considering is Discovery Bay has better ferry service, but if you have been there you know it has different lifestyle entirely (lots of high rise blocks).
I know you mentioned to ignore travelling time but seriously in the rainy season/tyhpoon seasons travelling hours back and forth everyday is not fun. If your looking for a quiet lifestyle there are other choices. Shek O is a small beach area on the island, quiet remote, but very busy with tourists on the weekend and public holidays. Or check out the Sai Kung area which is more like island life (without the ferries) and is actually quite close to Sham Shiu Po.
We will consume 85 million barrels of oil today, what's going to be left for tomorrow?

Thanks everyone for the reply. Typhoon would not really be a big problem for us, since our family has a large appartment in Sheung Wan, so we could always crash there. But still.. from what I read it's certainly something to take in consideration. The reason we like the islands is coz the lifestyle is more relaxed.. but We will check on Sai Kung and Shek O as well.. we have been to both places, we just never considered them. Thanks for the tip.

I'd go with HK'er on this, Sai Kung really is like Island life but has good transport links, and gorgeous views in places. Have considered going there myself, certainly cheap compared to a lot of places in HK. Clearwater bay area is also nice but a little more inconvenient for transport.
Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out and meet the bloody thing!

have you considered moving to Mui wo? at least you could take a bus from Tung Chung if the the transportation is disrupted by rainy season/tyhpoon.

I only just saw this..I lived on PC for a year...5 years ago ..gee, time flies. It's a nice place to live imho...far away enough and yet not so far. Didn't really like my neighbours, their dogs kept me up lots of nites, and there were also lots of centipedes around and some snakes. The islanders are nice, especially the older folks :)

To the first poster: I prefer when they say: "My wife and I" But I guess that was just the way we were educated.
What was that bar again??? Forrest?

Peng Chau has tons and tons of mosquitoes. A relative of mine actually lives there. But she is retired and she just plays marhjong with her neighbours.
