We're debating on whether to bring over the bicycles to HK. the relocation company are coming next week to pack and need to make a decision soon, the HK flat we have has limited storage place and really dont want to bring over bikes if they are unlikely to be used...what do you think..any sugestions? where do people go cycling in HK - Parks etc... dont mean the smoggy roads.

Unless you're going to live in NT's I would not bring the bikes. It's quite popular to rent a bike e.g. from Tai Wai (one KCR stop south from Shatin) and go biking for a day from there.

I do a bit of cycling on the island. Not main roads so much, but there's quite a few people doing it. Nothing serious for me, but I might ride up to the peak on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Still takes me an hour to get up there, but about 10 minutes to get back The drivers aren't too bad compared to where I come from. Never had a problem here yet.

I go riding up to the peak via Hatton path ( debatable if its inside or outside the boundary of the park).... its a steep climb and not many other cyclists seem to be around....its a shame that in hk bikes are not allowed in the country parks...there are 10 designated mountain bike trails but if you want to just ride leisurely in the parks it is off limits.....there is a bike path out around tai po.....lamma island has some good biking as does lantau....but hk island is not as bike friendly......one day I will bike like a local down the tram tracks to shau kei wan

When i go cycling alone, i rent bikes at Tai Po / Shatin area. There are main roads where you can cycle on, but you need lots of patience and tolerance for the other idiots who stop in the middle of the road, park their bikes sideways, or bike in zig zag. (argh!) There are also other paths you can go on if you are adventurous. The rental bikes aren't that bad if you're not too picky! They do have gears. When i go biking with my dad, he'll drive somewhere with our own bikes. He also cycles to work everyday, on the main road. As far as I know, he never applied for a permit and has never been asked for one.

The "off-road" comment refers to mountain biking in Country Parks - you certainly don't need a permit to cycle on normal roads or cyclepaths.
I have a cunning plan ........

Mount Davis is another decent uphill ride, and it's good coming down too as there is almost no traffic and very few pedestrians.

was thinking more about leisurely cycling with my 2 boys age 4 and 7 (is this out of the question??) we'll be living in the Peak Area, it is a shame that you can't cycle in the parks like in London...hmm....decisions, decisions....????
