Restriction on Liquids in Hand Carry at Airport? [ New Topic]

I just noticed on t' news that there is now a restriction coming into force to restrict what liquids you can take through the security check at t' airport.

You can still buy liquids after the security check and carry them on.

The news report said that as HKG is an international hub it had to be up to the same protocols as at other international airport.

- What's the point if you can fly in from say Shanghai with out such restrictions (and then transit)?
- What other airports in the region have such restrictions?
- I understand the whole concept of terrorists going into the toilet to construct a bomb out of liquids they'd smuggled on board had been found to be pretty much a load of Urban Myth and not at all practical.
- Which international hubs still have this restriction on liquids?

So why the f**k are we bothering with this facile protocol at HKG airport?

I was flying back from Toronto at Christmas. They were very strict about allowing people through security with water or liquids - one ziploc bag that you had to show to them. What really got my hair on fire was watching them take a bottle of water of someone then letting some posh-wanna be walk through with their Starbucks.

flying back from at CNY Aussie security confiscated my multi-tool thing, has little pliers, screw driver (was in with my laptop for repairs, fixing plugs, etc.)

Seriously I challenge anyone to commandeer a paper bag with it.......now it is gone......OTT for sure, had no problem with duty free liquids thou ;-)

on flights in india you cant take any spices on board as carry on luggage ...but then they serve lovelly spicey food......and yes it makes sense as curry powder or chilly powder could be used as a weapon aka into the eyes....

Manila also has restrictions on all liquids, ointments and gels. Plus you have to take your shoes off.

from the same:
in Korea & Japan they check your carry on luggage; every tax free shop thereafter sells stainless steel chopstick for 3 US a pair - and these are lethal and some

There is no rationale behind this - it is pure knee-jerk politics. Anyone with half a brain who wants to take down an airliner could do so.

When you transit you still have to go back through a security check to get into the Departures side - I would imagine they would also screen there for liquids

I have a cunning plan ........

bore the trolley dolleys to death with his strong and trenchant argument over the correct temperature for the coffee just served, albeit more ersatz coffee than coffee. pilot and crew would come to see why trolley dollies are dead, and he would bore them to death with wonderfully crafted stories based on his experiences as a CX Diamond card member continuously for the last seven years
