I was searching for the slum in Bangkok and came across this post.
I'll be in Bangkok this weekend. Those of you who are fimiliar with this city, can you suggest a place where I can get stationary and toys. (this would save me from having to lug it all the way from Hong Kong as I won't have any check-in luggage)

Orphanage in Bangkok
Located at 264/1 Rama VI Road, Phayathai, Bangkok.
Their phone number is 662-245-5635.

It's about 15 minutes from Khao san Rd by Taxi, Or if you get the skytrain its 2 mins from from Phaya Thai skytrain station. The place itself is called Phaya Thai Babies home, or in Thai its called BAAN DECK ORN Phaya Thai ( just tell the taxi driver this and they will know)

"There are about 200 Kids there and they range in age from 6 months to about 8 years old. You can visit anytime between 10 and 5 pm. Any day of the week.

If you go i think its a really good idea if you could bring with you some toys, or else you could contribute stuff which they really need such as Diapers (nappies) Milk powder, and other such stuff.Or you can donate money if you wish

Going there was a very moving experience which touched me greatly, and i defy anyone to leave without having a tear in their eye. Most of the kids have been abondoned by their parents who are too poor to take care of them. some of the kids are ill, some have been born HIV positive

You can just go and spend a morning or an afternooon there, and play with the children, especailly upstairs. The place itself is very underfunded and understaffed , and there are literally hundreds of little kids begging you to pick them up and hold and hug them.In a way its very sad, but by going there you can bring these kids some joy , even if its just for a few hours.I promise you some of them will hold on to you so tight they wont let you go."

Can't see how they feel any happier when you walk off. Maybe better not to pick them up in the first place. Sounds freakin depressing for all concerned.

Toys you can probably find in MBK or in the numerous small shops in the area around the Baiyoke Tower. Or Chatuchak of course but it'll be very busy & getting hot at this time.

And if you are feeling extra worthy, how about a visit to the Bangkok Hilton...

I knew a bloke from Stoke who served some serious time there for smuggling smack. Bet that sobered him up....

You might also try a TescoLotus. There is one right by On Nut skytrain station.
