Wife is off to Dubai for a week to meet up with best friend from London and has no idea how much money to take with her.
I don't let her have a credit card ( ) so need to work out how much cash to take. Hotel is pre-paid but any guidance on the general cost of a resonable restaurant/bar + any other big ticket expenses that may not be obvious.
tks

Women always know how to control the spending, it's the fella's that don't! On that note, I'm going to Stanley to do some shopping and I'll pass a credit card request form to Mrs Bloke

That's if you eat in Cafe De Coral every meal!!
Dubai has become a lot more expensive that what it used to be yes, but it's still no where near as expensive as Hong Kong. Apart from the hotels that is.
General items at supermarkets there are considerably cheaper than here in Hong Kong. Restaurants are also quite cheap, but that obviously depends on where you dine. A meal at the Burj al Arab will cost you an arm and a leg, but a meal at any decent restaurant not in a 5 star hotel is cheaper than what you would pay here. Booze is about the same price I reckon. 4-5K Dhirams should keep her happy for a week for food, a whole loada drinks and a bit of shopping.
The rate is about US$ 1 = UAE Dhs. 3.68, or UAE Dhs. 1 = HK$ 2.10
Cabs however are quite expensive if you have to go far off, and traffic is a b**ch these days.

Thanks Lucas
Yep - already know the hotels are expensive...even more expensive than london it seems !!
Was planning on giving her 10k honky ~ 4..7k Dhs so that sounds about right.
No travelling as i think they plan to chill out by the pool most of the time.
I heard a trip into old Dubai and the market is a must though - any comments ?

There ARE banks over there where you can withdraw money. It's not like it's Myanmar!

Def. visit the Gold Souk in Diera, and go on the "Abra" (their version of the star ferry). Near the gold souk are all the other markets, such as garments, food markets and electronics markets. IT would be nice to take a walk through and see how business is done there.... It amazed me the first time.
If her hotel is in Jumeriah, then there is a good mall/hotel called Madinat there which is done up really nice in and old fashioned arab style. It's also a good place to have dinner and drinks as there are a whole load of bars and restaurants there. There is also a club called Trilogy in the Madinat which has been rated one of the top ten clubs in the world apparently.
Then there is the Mall of Emirates which is apparently huge, but i've never been there.
