by car - approx 1 hour at peak morning time. 40 mins if u left at ~ 6:30 by bus/mtr/taxi - i suspect a bit longer - 1hr 20mins ??? Someone else who does this should be able to confirm.
if thinking by car do not underestimate the additional cost of tolls etc both ways.
There was talk once of a SK->Central ferry but i dont think anything came of it.

Given the tolls, what would you estimate is the total cost (petrol, tolls, taxes, insurance, parking etc etc) of running a small family saloon if living out in Sai Kung and commuting to Central every day?

i used to do it but that was a few years back so i'm sure there is someone with more up to date info.
all i remember is that it ended up being a lot more than we expected and basically negated the cost benefit of living in SK - but then again all our kids were at schools on the island so we were doing more journeys than most.

From Sai Kung to Mid Level is about 40km one way x 2 = 80km per day x 2$ per km = 160$ + 30$ Toll, plus parking in Mid level for 25$ per hour plus maintanance cost from the car etc......., i would forget the idea quite quick

I'd definitely forget it. Even if cost isn't an issue, the daily commute time will do your head in in the long run. Being stuck in traffic for over an hour twice a day, five days a week... I lived in Sai Kung for 4 years so I've experienced it myself.... Never again. *shudder*

I have to concur with Lola. Sai Kung is a GREAT place to live but ONLY if you and your family school and work in NT/Kowloon.
If you have anything to do with the island live on it (or Lantau if you don't get sea sick)

Thanks for the replys! Public transport sounds a lot less stress but 1hr 20min might be a bit much. Just trying to think of somewhere for the kids - they're used to the Aussie outdoors. Anyone have kids that commute DB to Kennedy or West Island School? How does that work for buses?

Wondering.. you could check out Clearwater Bay around the Silversrand area which is much closer to a MTR station that all the way down in Sai Kung..... that could take her journey time down to around an hour max....

My youngest is at Kennedy School and my eldest at West Island ~ there are a lot of kids at both schools who live in DB and also Lamma ~ school buses are well set up for the journey to coincide with ferry times etc.

Lamma would be a good choice - and it's in the West Island School catchment area.
Have you got places at those schools.
btw - did you know there is an Australian International school in Kowloon which is why SK is fully of Aussies.

Travelling time from Lamma to school must be >1 hour each way. That would be too long for my kids
Sai Kung to Aussie school is about 20 mins by car (they start early - no traffic), school bus around 30mins
Now that the MTR is at Hang Hau, commuting to the Island from SK or Clearwater Bay is easy. Bus/drive to Hang Hau, then on the MTR

Kids on Lamma who go to Kennedy School get the 7:20 ferry to school on the school bus and get back to the Central pier for the 3:15 ferry. It's a pretty long day. Though think about the half an hour ferry journey is 10 times more pleasant then being in a vehicle for 15 mins. That said, not everyone can handle the Lamma ferry schedule. On the other hand, DiscoBay, which has more frequent ferries might be an easier choice.

We're looking at ESF schools as we get a "discount" (we are originally form uk as well) hence the thinking Sai Kung and Shatin or DB and West Island (thanks Lola for the reassurance that buses work well - seems a long commute for our 5 yr old but at least his big sister will be with him). Also to add to the commuting problem I'll be working at the airport! Mr Rotavator, how long SK to central via Hang Hau?

Hang Hau to Central on the MTR is about 25 mins. Sai Kung town to Hang Hau is about 20 mins by minibus or car. Add some waiting time, etc and it's probably about an hour. Lots of places in Clearwater Bay are closer to Hang Hau MTR - places like Silverstrand are only 5 mins away

Wondering... the commute from SK to HH is about 20 mins on a minibus then about the hour ride on the MTR.. hence the suggestion to consider more closer to CWB Silver strand as this is much closer to HH MTR station.. also for you car journey to the airport it will be closer to the highway that you will take to the airport.. the drive for that would also take around 1.20mins
I would seriously scrap the SK idea and really consider DB or somewhere on the island.. Pokfulam, around mid levels east or even Happy Valley...
Working hours in HK can be long anyway and adding on a commute time for each parent and kids of over one hour will add to a stressful household.....
