puyi, to you, no private room for her means sleeping on kitchen floor? for your kind of logic, lots of local children are sleeping on kitchen floors then.

if you are happy then yes any adult who is entrusted with the care of children the duty of cleraning an apartment washing and cooking should be given a room......just as you would expect as an adult...there is a differnece the dh are adult workers not the family members

as i said before. if size does matter, no employment for them. you think it is better? its really their choice, do you understand that? propably NO.

Just like my reply to gdv's questions - couples who need to work for a living, but can't afford a private room for a maid can only leave their children at home all by themselves, which is better than not able to give the maid a private room.

For yer information, from the age of 9 to 14, I stayed happily in a 100 sq ft space with my family (5 of us), using it as a living area during the day, bedroom (matress on the floor) at night, using public toilet which was about 50 yards away.

As long as the helper is being treated right, her sleeping space shouldn't be a major issue if shes willing to take the job and gets paid few times more than she can earn back home.

Catz- are you saying its better to leave your kids alone than to not hire someone if you cant give them a room?

That was a question for puyi and those who said we shouldn't hire a maid because we can't afford a private room for her.

I think she is saying exactly the opposite.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

Well EB, I think some of us here think having a private room for a maid is more important than childcare.

oh, get you.
I agree with you- if theres a woman out there who CHOOSES to work in a household with no private space, but where she gets some personal freedoms, a good family to work with and some job satisfaction in aiding a childs' development, aswell as a salary to support her family, then its really up to her.
I don't know how many times those without helpers can really comment on the whys and wherefores of having someone in your house 24/7 who is not a member of your family, but who you are legally bound to support and live alongside.

then if its an issue of caring for the issue when the issuers are away then the dh laws should allow for them to live out of the shoe boxes ......that would suit both parties concerned ....or maybe just hire local workers for those hours the issuers are off earning ?????

Puyi -You're right. Care to go and have a word with someone in Immi. on our behalf? You seem to have the most passion for the subject.

Depends why you need a helper in the first place. Cooking, cleaning and shopping can be done by a p/t, no problem.

If you don't have space for the DH, then they can live out. You have to pay for their room and board.

I understand that it is common for families to share bedrooms and small living space, but I don't believe that it is appropriate for an employee. Should an employee have to endure innappropriate conditions because their employer would be inconvenienced? no. Each family makes differents sacrifices and choices.

As for the silly argument that things are worse in Singapore.... we are in Hong Kong - wake up to that fact. In Canada they would be making significantly more money and would be eligible for immigration and residency.
