We are trying to decide which school we should put our son in, ESF school or HKIS? I have seen many comments on ESF schools, anyone knows anything about HKIS? He is very into sports, football, rugby, anyone could give me some ideas which school has better sports program? Thx!

It's very into the Church if that helps....and it's basically viewed as the American School in HK.

Both options are probably very good, but HKIS is a lot more expensive. I would say that is is worth a visit to both and an inquiry to see if they actually have openings in the year group you are looking at.

We had the same decision to make when moving here 2 years ago from the UK. We chose HKIS because of the fantastic facilities and the smaller class sizes. Although we are returning to the UK after our stay here and ESF follows the UK curriculum, our youngest was starting school for the first time in HK and we preferred the class size of 15 rather then 30 in ESF. Also, the way the birth dates and term times are decided out here meant our children would have 'skipped' a year and started out here a year ahead and would have probalby struggled. We took the decision it would be easier to 'catch-up' at home.

HKIS is an American school. Our two sons love it and the community sports at weekends and after school acitivites are excellent. The teaching methods are more relaxed to what we are used to but our sons are very happy there and developing well.

A visit to each school is essential to make an informed decision and bear in mind that with ESF I think you need to live in the catchment area of each school.

HKIS is primarily a Christian missionary outpost - full time staff members are required to be actively practising Christians. To me this is incompatible with a well-rounded education so no kids of mine would ever go there regardless of any other factors. Education should be grounded in facts not in irrational beliefs.

Rather broad paintbrush you are using SMOG. I would suggest that a parent may want to make a visit and decide for themselves. I have visited that school and was not burned at the stake for my beliefs.

If your kids are coming from an international American school do them a favor and don’t send them to the ESF schools. (Unless they are very young)

This is from personal experience

I believe the ESF schools routinely thrash HKIS at both football and rugby.
