Can make some difference, I noticed in my old flat you could see the grime build on the filter, current place is in a high floor so air seems to be a bit better.

NeverEver if any of your family suffers from Asthma, you'll find it gets aggravated at times, but as said before may big cities have similar problems.

the air purifier button is permanently switched on when i use the dehumidifier but i cant really say whether it makes the air any better ....just another led making some light in the apartment

There's little doubt that the pollution in HK is probably the worst out of all the major "world-cities". Much worse than any of the that I've been to without doubt.
