Also if you go and see the Orang Utans keep yer eye on the ones in the trees. One of the buggers had great pleasure in urinating on my arm. Watch the smaller monkey's that tease them as well cos they throw stuff at you! Enjoy.

Didn't dive.. water quite dirty around the marine park.. getting there was pretty pain free Dragonair left on time and no hassle to the hotel when arrived

A nice relaxing break

I'll take it off my dive list for now. Was it seasonal dirt as in run off from the shore?

Paps, (or anyone else for that matter)

Mrs smog and I are thinking about a few days break in May and considering Bali or Kota Kinabalu - any thoughts on pros & cons of each given a reasonable budget (neither of us is into diving / water sports)?

Do you want 'lazing around on a beach' or 'active hikes inland'?

Smog,

I would recommend KK if you just want somewhere to relax. We were at the Shangri-La and it had everyhting you would expect in a upper-end-ish resort. We had a quick look around neaby hotels and were happy with our choice. It was well located, with the centre of town only 10 mins away in a cab and around 30HKD fare. We got a full meal including drinks for 80HKD in town, and it was nicer than any food we had in the hotel.

The resort beach was marginal, the water being cloudy, but theres plenty of places to pull up the sunlounger away from the kids.

The island trip we went on was as described by Paps, poor, however in retrospect, we prolly didnt choose the best island to visit.

All in all, I'd go again.

Totally agree with Spanner, would consider KK again for a nice getaway.. aside from sun lounging there are other more active things to do like hiking, going to markets, Monkey visits etc

We really enjoyed just lounging around and hanging out

Have been to the Shangri La in KK FOTH and would agree with Paps & Spanner's comments above. Given the choice though, I'd go to the Conrad in Tanjung Benoa, Bali. Has to be one of the nicest and most relaxing hotels I have been to. If you go, get one of the rooms on the ground floor with steps into the lagoon/pool.....wow superb!!

Unfortunately I only did a couple of overnight stopovers in KK. Next time, I'd like to see the Orang utans and the proboscis monkeys but isn't the proboscis monkey place very far from KK? I heard you have to take another domestic flight?

a good couple of hours coach trip each way - no flight, good but a long way for what it was

There's some more monkeys and orang utans at the other Shangri La hotel there though, not that far away from KK.

Was there a few weeks ago and saw the orangutans, no mention of any monkeys in that reserve.
