Got a tiny little problem, 1st DH in HK starting soon, had a couple before but in Mainland, there it was simple that we called them ayi and they called us back X xiansheng and X taitai. I feel a bit troubled how to do it with the SE Asian maid, should she call me Mr and my wife Mrs, and should we call her Amah? Or should we use 1st names instead? How you guys do it?

What's wrong with using the first name. You could call her Ma'am if you feel the need to act subservient - or Nursey if it's a more public school bed-wetting issue you have,

When we were young, the maids in the house were called by their one single name and add " Jair " at the end. meaning sister.
ie. yip ling will be called ling-Jair.
Our Phillipino helpers are called by their names simply Rosa, maria etc,
I think in mainland they are called ayi, meaning auntie.
Where about is your SE Asian maid from exactly?

Ah yeah, jair jair (jie jie) is a good one for the kids to use.... and I agree LT, nothing wrong to be on 1st name basis for the adults. Ours will be Filipina, speaking good English... perhaps there's a good takalog word to use...

Nothing wrong with calling each other by first name, 10 times nicer than someone calling you ma'am or sir if you ask me!!!
For the kids, they can call her auntie whatever to show a bit more respect.

LT, guess yours is mandarin pron. 'Jair' is Cantonese, more emph. on the -- air'

Besides, Mig. it is much more friendly to find out the ayi's surname, for yip ling, it would be nice to be called Yip-ayi, for future reference.

Hee hee, Ginang sounds very rude in Mandarin. Do you agree Shazza ?

According to Juytping, the new "standard" romanization that the Cantofreaks use it's written as "ze"

My (part-time) DH and I address each other by our first names - the same way as I would address anyone else that I work or socialise with.

(Except, of course, for spunky, who will always be spunky to me)

Having said that, Mrs smog calls my DH "ate" (big sister) for cultural reasons. My DH calls Mrs smog by her first name.
