Any travel tips for Italy.

What's a must visit ? Is it easy to get around on trains etc or do you need a hire car ?

I am planning to fly into Rome and will be there for two weeks, would like to do a mix of beach.. maybe Sardenia and maybe one of the lovely cities too... any suggestions ?

I'm envious. Italy is stunningly beautiful.

I last visited Italy last summer with my daughter and the highlight was the ligurian coast (up north)--the Cinque terre. You can walk between five villages along the clifftops and through vineyards as old as some rice paddies in Asia.

Northern Tuscany, around Lucca, also fantastic. A bit quieter and a nice break from the sightseeing rat race that is Venice and Florence. I've heard Sardinia is lovely although haven't visited. I suggest interspersing the busy cities with quieter stops because the tourist pace is heated.

The only other advice is to lose some weight before you go because the food is waaaaayyyy too good and it's easy to gain weight.

I try to always come from a place of love. But sometimes you just got to break it down for a motherf**ker. -RuPaul

I had a traveling book. You can ask me to borrow if you want to take a look. It was written by Chinese. It's worth to read because you could find a lot of stunning pictures inside.

Florence, Venice - stunning places. Not at all cheap. Rome is incredible too. You should go with the train option as actually very good on the inter city routes.

Yes train is easy enough. Milan for shopping. Venice is unlike any other city in the world. Take a run out to Lido Island while in Venice.
Florence is nice also.

I was mugged in Milan. I wouldn't have minded but i was leaving the crappy place as it was too expensive.
Go North to Venice/Bologna ( place of romeo and Juliet) or Lake como - amazing.
South to Rome, and down the Southern coast , Portofino etc. - use trains- they are very good, clean and actually have working toilets. They also have good quality sleepers if you are travelling North- South and dont want to lose time.

Avoid Milan, most boring city in Italy. As others have mentioned, Venice, Florence, Bologna, Rome etc.

If you get a chance go to Pompeii. It is like a film set and makes any other Roman ruin look like a pile of rocks. Also in that area go to Herculaneum, similar to Pompeii but about 10% of the tourists. If you stay in Sorrento you can do both by local train.

Sienna is a must see for me (in Tuscany), also Venice. Rome is also a must see but two weeks there is way too long for just Rome.
I hired a car from Rome and drove north through Sienna, Florence, Milan, Venice, Verona, checked out the Dolomites then on to my favourite spot in the world, Porto Veneri which is in Genova, not for frm the Cinque Terra (which is now so touristy that it's annoying). Porto Veneri is a fishing village where basically noone speaks English, so your italian must be passable, but the food! ohhhh!

Am about to die of jealousy!

Italy for me brings back memories of being on the end of a Police Baton charge in Turin in 84 and a police herding from San Siro to buses in 99, whilst being bottled by rabid eyeties.... not great memories for me, and no I won't be back in a hurry

Paps if you get down south, go to Sicily - especially Taormina - where they filmed the movie the Big Blue

beautiful place, lovely people, fantastic food and wine, and a short drive to Marsala, for some nice dessert wine that I like, as reward for this great tip

yeah, yeah, yeah

I have a very good mate in Modena who might be able to arrange a little visit and a dinner at the restaurant used by the drivers and such next to the test track. If anyone is interested....?

go a bit further south - la spezia/massa, very nice beaches and not catering for foreign tourists, mostly italians for a short holiday a few hours from home.
Marina di Massa, Chiara, hmmm
and it's very "close" to Pisa & Bologna (amongst others)
