Manila - I got everything confiscated the other day. Toothpaste, deodorant, cologne, shaving foam, my frickin hair wax that I get sent from the UK .. which I claimed is solid. No luck. All I was left with was my razor and toothbrush!
They found that on the x-ray or a hand search? The standard trick for a hand search is to bury everything inside your dirty underwear. Then you've got a 20% chance (maybe) of being handsearched, and a 10% chance of them finding it if they do, which is an acceptable risk to avoid checking bags as far as I am concerned.

x-ray dude told hand search dude to check my bag. He was very thorough. Checked everywhere.

The "logic" is that you could combine liquids in a bigger container. The problem, of course, is that you can buy a container airside of, say 1.5 litres and empty the water out anyway.

The whole thing is totally irrational and a sham. Hopefully enough people are beginning to realise this that the idiots who make this stuff up will be forced to withdraw it.

Probably the shaving foam that got you - metal shows up on the x-ray. If you can get by on toiletries which are in plastic containers you should be OK.

Shaving gel is considered liquid as well.

I watched a lady in front of me getting her lip balm confiscated at Birmingham airport last week, as it was considered liquid, not solid...

had lunch with someone from the industry on friday, apparently it would cost a tad more than two fortunes to upgrade their scanners to see if the liquids are harmful or not. Therefore, the products sold air side are scanned by these holy-moses-s**t-expensive machines, whilst the passenger scanners don't.

Advice: don't be a pain and make sure your container is less than the advised 100ml.

I want to understand, but sometimes I think they're just making a meal of it. On the other hand, I'd prefer to get back home safely every weekend, so ...

This is typical of the complete bulls**t spouted by people in the business who prey on the fact that most people are too stupid to see through it. In the vast majority of cases the liquids shipped airside aren't scanned in any meaningful way, and nor are many of the people who work airside.
