She was also caught out by the '1/4 full 200ml bottle' situation...which is still very bizarre.
Regulation is very clear as far I can see
"in containers of a capacity less than 100ml"
I have a cunning plan ........

They check as you are going through passport control so anything you buy in duty free goes unchecked.

OK - i nhave to confess i never read the small-print....but the question still stands as tio why the size of the bottle is important - surely it's the volume of stuff inside that counts does it not ?

This limit is a scam purely so airports can make more money - it's got nothing to do with terrorism and no one has yet convinced me otherwise.
Average by Intention.

Not quite the same issue, but some pushback has got under way now. The EU was planning to bring in the "only one hand carry with tight size control" regime that the UK has, but now they have deferred implementation and put it out to study by a committee, which should kill the idea effectively. (see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=684641 ). The UK "only one bag" rule is certainly all about maximising the profit of the airport operators because they don't want to hire enough screeners to screen more cabin baggage.

Bizarre experience coming back through Heathrow last Thursday - you go through the normal scan and then there is a 2nd scanner where you have to take off your shoes and put then through....but this 2nd check appears to be optional. No idea what's going on there.

Yes - I noticed that last time through LHR T3 - if you behaved like a sheep you walked up and handed your shoes in for a scan, but if you just walked on by nobody said a word. That was indeed very bizarre, but I think the basis is that there is some arbitrary sampling frequency (like 30 or 50%) which they are required to do and they have decided that the easiest way to meet this "target" is to let people self-select. Which, of course, makes a mockery of doing the testing in the first place.

Manila - I got everything confiscated the other day. Toothpaste, deodorant, cologne, shaving foam, my frickin hair wax that I get sent from the UK .. which I claimed is solid. No luck. All I was left with was my razor and toothbrush!
I go to Manila often, just for short trips, so although I can leave HK with just hand carry and < 100ml containers, I have to check in on the way back or I'd have a chance of losing all my stuff.
Stood waiting for 40 mins yesterday for my bag to come out, cursing terrorists and over-reacting authorities.

They found that on the x-ray or a hand search? The standard trick for a hand search is to bury everything inside your dirty underwear. Then you've got a 20% chance (maybe) of being handsearched, and a 10% chance of them finding it if they do, which is an acceptable risk to avoid checking bags as far as I am concerned.

Nah, I tried this with a half full 150 ml container. They said it's the size of the container that counts.
