Hi all, I would like to ask whether there exist check-ups for people who will be going to Tibet, to see if they can adapt to the thin air etc. over there? Thank you!

13,000 feet ~ 4,000m

To be honest i doubt you will need any special medication etc. It's higher than HK but i's not the top of Mt. Everest.

Mount KK - the highest mountain in SE Asia - is ~4,000m and most people can climb that without anything special.

if you read the news then you should know that many people have breathing problems by taking the train there. and yes, the tibet tableau is more than 4000m high.

yes, if they are too gung-ho, but if you are sensible and take it steady 4,000m is NOT a life-threatening height for an adult of average health.

it's right to be sensible, but not to be paranoid or put off by scaremongering

its the only train where are all the time medical staff stand by, and this has some reason. has nothing to do with scaremongering.

Do you think smokers get scared by a petty 4000m? We inhale carcinogens all day every day - we're not scared of 4000 gay meters.

I think you'll find many mountaineers who enjoy a tab or two. At least it looks like it on A1 Channel from my couch.

I was in Tibet for 3 weeks in august 06 and with any high altitude its the rate of ascent that affects one...if you fly to Lhasa then the rate is very quick and can be felt by some with headaches sleeplessness nausea ....but if you take the train its an acclimatization in itself and so when you get to Lhasa you wont feel the effects as much.......there are pills you can take which will reduce the altitude sickness but wont stop you getting it ......I trekked for 5 days to mt Everest base camp with 2 blokes who were 20 years younger than myself...they got altitude sickness on 2 of the passes at 5000 meters I was lucky and got none ..It’s like that it can effect 1 person and not another.......in 2003 I mountain biked across the Himalayas to the nubra valley at 5300 meters and was also lucky not to get altitude sickness its hit and miss
if you go to Tibet you generally will acclimatize within 2-3 days ..............
Tibet is very good but compared to the rest of china its more expensive

Tibet is amazing. As said, when you're dropped to Lhasa by plane you will be hit by headache and you need to take it easy for the first 24 hours or so. But that somehow adds to the "trip", really an unreal feeling of being there - it's another world. Go for it, but if you're unsure just consult your GP first.

I've just read that "independent travelers" are not allowed in tibet. So we must join a tourist agency of some sort?

Not sure how it is these days, but some years back you could join a quasi-tour from Chengdu but that was just a formality, after that you were free to go as you like. Guess it's still the same?

to get into tibet you still need a tibet permit which you get when you buy a plane ticket..you get the travel agency to purchase your permit which you then never see....the tour group is formed with all the permit holders 5 mins before you go the check in the tour group stays togetehr a further 5 mins whilst you all pass through security check and then in a tear filled fafrewell your group disband and sit about the terminal waiting to catch the flight.................
if you are going through chengdu then try sams cozy guest house they can purchase the plane tickets and permits for you the guest house is back packer style and cheap and good...they also will take you out to airport for the flight....

oh and inside tibet you also need other permits to travel to other parts of tibet ....in tibet you need to hire 4wd vehicles to get you to places like shigatse and gynaste and everest base camp ...you put up or read a notice that is around the baclk packer places and form a group and then hire a vehicle ..the hire group will get the permit for you as well

For anyone who enjoys this type of thing I highly recommend the photo exhibition "A Compassionate Eye: Photographs by the Venerable Matthieu Ricard" at the HKU museum, there are some fantastic photos of Tibet. It's on until May 6.

Thanks puyi, we'd be taking the train, can't wait!

Add:

Are cards (credit, ATM) advisable (or usable)? Thanks!
