i have been led to believe, mara', that the air is indeed better than 10 years ago when everyone burned coal blocks/bricks for heat/cooking. i am surprised that it is the most polluted city on earth.

Beijing issues pollution warning as skies turn yellow
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news? tmpl=story&cid=1540&e=5&u=/afp/chinaweatherpollution
Beijing(AFP)- People in Beijing were warned to stay indoors as the chinese capital was shrouded in a yellow smog with pollution reaching dangerous level. Beijing's air quality has been the lowest level so far for the pats 2 days with the air "seriously polluted" as the bureau said. During the past decade of china's economic boom, the nation has also produced some of the worlds most polluted cities, with beijing/s air quality regularly ranking among tha worst in the country and the world. so..npg..better stay indoors if you are in beijing..to be on the safe side..[:-(][:-(]

According to my research:
Air Pollution- City Comparisons The three main pollutants are: 1.suspended particles- made up of soot, smoke amd dust 2.sulfur dioxide- produced by combustion of fossil fuels, motor vehicles, small and varied sources( boilers and stoves) contributing most3.)nitrogen dioxide- caused by fuel combustion, aerobic decomposition and nitrogenous fertilizers.
Beijing- has the highes mg m3 of suspended particles, highest mg m2 for sulfur dioxide, highest mg m3 of nitrogen dioxide.. Surpassing even Mexico City which has 279- 74 and 130. Next to Mexico is Bombay, then Moscow the rest of the cities are ok..

mara' thanks for your interesting info' :-)
i was in bj back in '99. i remember there being a few days when the streets were filled with a 'white cloud' it was so amazing i took some pic's from a building. i'm not sure what it was....maybe a combo of the 3 you mentioned and overcast weather?????
i also witnessed the celebrations of 50 years of communist rule (oct 1) for two weeks there were clear skies as the gov' closed down factories in and around bj. they even removed all the beggars and homeless people etc un-sightly and unwanted buildings actually dis-appeared over night!
i was told a story by someone i know who was in bj before they banned the use of coal, who walked around one day in white pants. when he got back home there was a black outline of his smokes packet that were in his pocket.
