Working in Central what are some suggestions for locations for a serviced apartment?
What is the real difference from a small apartment other than the lease time? And possibly any first/last/etc.
Saw a few places, but for transition phase (initial 6 month)....what are area's that in retrospect one might avoid and area's that one might do better to live in...looking in the low to moderate rent range (like the 7 to 10k HK per month).
I'd change the Avatar if I could....but for now, when life throws you lemons....pick em' up and throw em' right back!

Actually that rent range is low and lower. But there are loads of people on here that can advise suitable places.

when I hit the 12k range, it becomes significant against my current salary. I can live in DB for 12 to 14......or Tong Chung with a 1 br for the 6 to 7k range (but the commute is about an hour)..
Tung Chung looks good though...but might be forced to share a building with all those stewardess'.

The nicer service apartments are usually about 12k to 16k.

but the cost of the ferry was I think about 27hk.....but didnt remember the cost of mtr for the total Tung Chung to central station...in any case it seemed like a lot more (the ferry I mean).
But time and cost to and from Central might add up since its utilized no less than twice a day or more.

there are smallish apartments for around 8-10 k still in central soho area..mostly walk up old buidlings but they have their own advantages like being bigger for the price....best to walk around the area and see what is on at local real estate agents

If you need a short term rent W studios (www.wstudios.com.hk) in Sheung Wan is sort of OK. We stayed there when we first arrived in HK and it's very conveniently placed. Other than that the place is ok but not great but it's btw 6.5 and 9.5K and it's very flexible (after the first month you can leave when you want).
Alternatively you can stay at the Harbour Plaza Resort in Tin Shui Wai (which is in the NT) for a studio (last time I looked) it's 5900 per month and you have the gym, swimming pool etc. the only problem is that it's very far from central (saying that it's very far HK style, certainly a lot closer than anything I could ever afford when I lived in London, so it's all relative :-) )
up to not much

Thank you all for the help. I'm going to look into the suggestions.....and it does look like the ferry is on par with the Tung Chung area.

Theres a heaven and hell difference between half an hour on a ferry and half an hour on a packed MTR. I would stay in a 500 sq ft flat in DiscoBay and get the ferry rather than walking distance to work in a shoebox in Sheung Wan with the same money.
ps. I don't even like DiscoBay but I love space.

You may still consider trying harder to find a sweet spot... why u need a serviced apartment? just rent an apartment in local blocks, e.g. in Quarry Bay: max 10 minutes walk to country park, max 10 minutes to busy urban life and MTR...

would, but my 'try HK probationary time'....is 6 months...then I don't know, they would like me to stay for a very long time, but I can't commit for that having not worked there. most places wont rent for less than the one year plus one year more option.....
otherwise I'd go for a simple apt...even a small tiny one in db.

I'm ok. Got the folks at the company. In any case, no matter where I end up, I can generally live with it. Just need a gym now and again, cable tv, and internet. Then I'll embark on my "Beers of Asia" tour.
