At what point do you think it's really time to see the doctor to see if there is something really wrong with you, and it's not just in your head?

velvet - I would always say sooner than you think. If it's a false alarm then you could have saved 500 bucks. If it's not then you could save your life.

Velvet
When you are losing sleep, can't function, lost a ton of weight or gain a ton of weight and having suicidal thoughts constantly. Most people suffer mild form of depression. Oprah used to talk about it all the time on her shows.

it should have been weeks ago. and so now, we all encourage you. the biggest thing stopping most expats seeking helps of any kind is the different culture and the cost of finding someone to help. these days there are many expats with a lower income than in the past and who find it too expensive to seek the help of some of the expat medicos. therefore, i suggest you can seek help from st john's counselling, though this is only available on hk island. if you're not a christian and have no religion, i think they are still fine. if you are from any kind of church, it might be a time to walk through the doors again and seek the help of a minister or one of the church staffers. you'd be amazed how good it is to just have someone to share a cup of coffee with. try to avoid the new age christians as they will prescribe a dose of "let jesus save you" which is not what you need. avoid alcoholo and coffee, exercise more and try to eat less. eat during daylight and only snack in the dark. move the t.v., write a list of books to read, buy a new radio and listen to the BBC. walk home instead of taking public transport, take the trip to the outlying islands you keep promising yourself... and so on.

mbd's advice = excellent
I would add that "Resource" (similar to St john) is located in Central, is a good place with good people. You need to ring and make an appointment, they normally run an advert in HK mag.

maybe I read Velvet's post incorrectly......but to me I got the spin that she is worried about a potential medical condition and is worried that it's hypocrondria and is embarasesd that she will waste the doctor's time.........to which i say Relax!!
Most expat GPs in HK are here to 70% make money and 30% help people. They will be as happy to seekyou dollars as you will be to hear their diagnosis.

mbd has good advise. i had a really bad depression and it is really a terrible experience... find a friend... talk... just keep talking... when you talk it makes you let out the pressures building up in your head... you have friends here... call them and meet them... you will bore them but it will help you...

Truly, thank you for your advice. I sincerely appreciate it. I have never contemplated suicide, nor will I ever. I just don't believe that is an option, for me. Unless something really drastic happens to me like, a terminal illness with which the suffering is unbearable. But even then, something good may come of that. I digress.
HKBloke, you're not far from the truth. Not just the embarrassment or wasted money, but also trying to justify having to make such an appointment in the first place.
green tea, *big hug* Good to be home now. I hope you're doing well too!
shoegirl, I recently caught the Oprah Show with Brooke Sheilds, where she shared about post partum depression. Yes, Oprah is good, I enjoy watching her show.
minibusdriver, all brilliant points. May I ask what a new age Christian is? I am a conventional Methodist (which partly explains why I wouldn't think of taking my own life) but being a believer doesn't eliminate "bad things", if you get my drift.
kamote, I'm waiting for a good friend of mine to return from her trip and then I'll be having her over for lunch, dinner, and whatever she'll agree to!! I'll try not to bore her though! lol
I can't really say for sure that I know if I am depressed or not, and I put down the crying for no valid reason to pms. But I did wonder what others thought about the subject. And isn't it strange/funny/weird that we can broach this with 'strangers', finding it easier than to admit it to people who are close to us.
Thank you once again.

Perhaps begin by changing your signature comment?
In the normal Chinese old families and communities, there was less time for mental problems, and there were many outlets for such things - plenty of people to talk to and finally, the old fortune-teller who acted as an Aunt Agony with some practical ways to heal and exorcise devils. They gave one things to do and bits of copper or metal to wear - the old-fashioned placebo.

Velvet, here's one mixey (as they like to say here) to another ;)
Call Samaritans's Hotline. Don't have their no. handy, but you can surely find it via the internet or even by calling 1083 (the Chinese no,. I seldom call the English no.)
They helped me many years ago when I needed someone to talk to late at nite. No strings, no names divulged.
Blessings :)

You are welcome to vent here. It is hard to tell people around us our problems. I think most chinese in Hong Kong don't believe in psycho theraphy. Most people think only crazy people needs counselling.

Velvet,
Mixed and mixed up are two very different things, in case you mixed them up.
Anyway....we are all mixed down from one core ancestral place, and it wasn't Paradise - Adam n Eve but Africa somewhere it seems where Ethiopa is.

I think medical Dr.s and the experimental medicines they try out are bad news. So try your best to stay off the hard core stuff. Tom cruise was ranting about natural things to take to help balance ones chemical imbalance. Maybe you can try and read up on that.
IF you know the person close enough, try and find out what the root cause problem is. Is it a fear of something? Loneliness? and then go from there. Until they can isolate the problem they can't really fix it. Shoe girl has an excellent idea, as they can get all the free logical advice they want here should they need to vent. Have them register, and carry away. There are more caring people who post on this site than you might realise. Of course, they will have to ignore the regular ass*wipes.
I'm bored, I'm pi*sy, and, I have no shame.

When I am depressed, it is not sadness or crying, I just feel bored and have a lack of interest in most things. It's bad because it can affect lots of things like work performance, keeping up with everything. If you think you are depressed you probably are.
Happens to me about every 3 or 4 years. Never to the point I can't function. I often wonder too if it's much to do about diet and not just brain chemistry.

Unhappy and clinically depressed are different things. Friends and support systems can be critical when you are feeling unhappy, but they cannot help you with the brain chemistry imbalance of a clinical depression. While it is true that some depressions pass with time - that time can be significant. If you are having trouble sleeping, have significant changes in eating habits, don't participate in events that you would normally go to, withdraw from your friends and family..etc. You should see a professional and not us. If you just need support - find a good friend that can do that for you.
