Yeah I know, Paps... I was so looking forward to it, too, precisely because I knew you rated it highly. That's why I was so surprised that it was even less than mediocre. I seriously doubt I'll bother going back to give it a second try, to be honest.

sounds like a good place to wreck up - couple of bints as waitresses, a pool table, a view. Was the paint-stripper expensive ?

I didn't have to foot the bill, thank god, and didn't get to see the wine list either. But I suspect it wasn't cheap... and certainly not worth the premium given the (lack of) service. The food, when it arrived, was good tho.
And the waitress may have been a bint, but she was definitely not a hot bint.

wine can do something about that, in general corkage? BYO is becoming more popular here as I found some dirt cheap but very good chileans across the pond.
so what's the food like?

Haven't the faintest idea what the dishes were called as I'd buggered off to upstairs balcony for a cigarette. Was along the lines of posh snacks as we were in bar downstairs in the room next to the pool table... hummus, fancy breads, something that looked like quesadilla but wasn't exactly, olives, cold cuts, multicoloured tortilla chips'n'dips, two kinds of chicken wings (one grilled, the other battered & deep fried).
There were seven of us, three bottles of red, one bottle of white, about eight or nine dishes... I'd guess the bill would easily have topped two grand, more likely closer to three.

Even so, Paps, there should not be such a enormous discrepancy in service quality between upstairs and downstairs, resto and bar, should there?

It was just bog-standard stuff off the bar snacks menu, not the full upstairs resto menu. It was nothing they should not have been able to handle.
And f**king off after pouring the first round never to reappear again even to check if there was anything else we wanted etc is not good form, no matter which way you slice it.

Apparently, I have quite the knack for it... either that or I'm secretly invisible. So skilled was I that no one at my table noticed it was me pouring at first; I was forced to draw attention to the fact.

Was there in hk last week and caught the flu, but despite feeling under-the-weather, a friend took me out to enjoy what he says is the best szechuan resto around- the Red Pepper. Best onion patties and chicken szechuan i've ever tried. Great food, great convo, but alas, I forgot the name of the street where this place is located (in Kowloon)...
and whats the big deal with Habitu? people keep telling me its a great spot but I find the pizza- which is supposedly their specialty- mediocre...good service though...

I have no problem with Red Pepper, but it is very gweilo heavy, and criticised as such. Does this mean it's not authentic or just expensive?
