I know this wasn't one of yours spannermonkey, but it was at CX (albeit on a freighter). I hope yours aren't likely to do anything similar?

That's what they say, but it looks to me like the whole engine fell off when they engaged reverse thrust...

If this was the one that happened the other day in Europe it was a 747 and it was a reverse thruster that came off on landing

Yes - it was at Frankfurt. One of the Rolls Royce engines so a bit close to home for the monkey I guess...

I think he'll need more than a spanner to fix it!

The engine had been removed in that picture Smog. Thrust Reverser detached during landing after it deployed. A bit of a mess. Would not physically happen in flight - only on the ground.

Didn't a Lauda Air have a thrust reverser deploy during flight? It didn't fall off but.....

Aye it did, and there is now a s**t load of legislation in place to stop an inadvertant deployment, this one however is totally unrelated. The pilot selected reverse thrust, but if failed structurally. The Lauda Air was a control system fault and the deployment was uncommanded.

The thing that got me about the Lauda case is that I thought that (simplistically) the bolts holding the engine on should shear if excessive vibration occurred so that the engine came off before the wing did? So I'd have expected a reverse thruster deployment to generate sufficient vibration or unusual forces that the whole pylon should just have come away?

Yes - I realised that when I looked at the pictures again in detail. Would have been a bit sphincter-tightening if it had been passenger and you'd been sitting in 65A or thereabouts looking out of the window...

Nevermind the passenger 'what ifs', you should read the Pilot Report from the incident. Scary Stuff.

Yes - I can imagine it requires pretty damn good reactions from the flightdeck to avoid doing a rather dramatic pirouette when you've got one engine going fullthrust forwards and the other 3 going full thrust backwards.
