Why don't you use English spell-checkers instead of American ones?
But even in English the traditional rule of thumb was that if the root was Greek then it took a "z", and if the root was Latin an "s".

If you set the defaults in Windows to UK English so the spell checker works, you may find some keyboard symbols change positions.
