I've just been given a quote for a return flight to UK + HK$ 1820 tax. Is that standard airport tax or some other add-on, and I'm getting ripped off? This time last year I paid 1540.

Airport departure tax is set by the government and is HKD120. The rest of the "taxes" are security and anything else the airline can get away with. These "taxes" vary from airline to airline. Fuel surcharge could be part of it as well.

A bit like 'Service Charge' then it hides any additional cost or charges and enables an airline to advertise 'cheap fares' still then?

A con job in other words.

its just wrong, price is what i have to pay, i dont give a s**t on how the airline breaks it down, they should not trouble me with that. ijn fact what they do is misleading us.

maybe i should sue them for 250 million?

waiter: Coffee is HK$ 12 Ma'am
Guest: ok ill have one please

Guest: "cheque Please"
Waiter: that will be HK$ 48 Ma'am
Guest: I thought you said HK$ 12
Waiter: oh yes Ma'am thats totally correct, 12 is for the coffee, service charge is HK$ 6, Sugar costs HK$ 3 and milk costs HK$ 5, add to that an increase in airconditioning costs due to fuel cost increases at the power staion and here we arrive at HK$ 48!
Guest: swallows and leaves

and this is how its kept up, as noone truely complains about this anymore, the airlines and other organizations get away with these kind of practises.

Maybe the airlines aren't charging us for the milk and coffee but the fact of extra security because of those darn terrorists. Yes I think we'll blame it on the terrorists. And oh by the way religion has nothing to do with it... It will be good when the communities harbouring these "infidals" finally wake up and realise this and may just stop putting up with their 'cr@p!'

Depending on which airline you're flying with depends on how much "taxes" you'll be paying. A recent example saw me being quote $2437 "tax" on top of a ticket to the UK compared to EK who only wanted an extra $993 on top of their ticket price to the same destination. Like the others have said, the "tax" is not just the airport tax but sneakily includes fuel surcharges & extra security charges that we, as passengers have to foot.
