Anyone been there? Got any recommendations of good packages that can be booked at late notice? Wouldn't mind a golf weekend away in a week or two.

I've been there for the Easter. I went to "China Travel Agency" and they made me a very good offer (it's much better than organize by yourself). If they don't have direct flight then you have to take it from Shenzhen and you will need the ticket for the ferry. Take everything from them. The ticket will have half price. The visa will come in two days and costs 100HK$. I stayed at The Cactus Resort (south of the island) which has the best beach on the island and close to the deck for the divings. What to see? The End of the Earth, the temple from Nanshan Guayin, the hot springs (there are many). The seashell museum is nice if you have an hour to waste. The restaurants in Sanya are not so fancy, but they offer you very good seafood. And cheap. Are you interested in the pearls? Well, there is the place to buy them. All sizes and colours at very convenient prices because they have a very large pearl farm on the island. The clima is very good. DRY (well, compearing with HK). I heard there is a place named Monkey Island. I've never been, but I will search for it next time there.

Why go to china first there are direct flights from HK with at least two airlines and reasonably priced..........

The problem was I went too late to get the package and all the direct flights from HK were booked out. Remember, there was the Easter time when I was there and I asked for an offer only three weeks before.

There is a bunch of international hotels in Sanya if that's y' thing. You can get tours 'bout the island. The Mrs got a taxi all day for 100 RMB - but she is Shanghainese.... Loads of divin' - but as they suggested me kids (aged 6 & 7 at the time) could scuba dive with no training - well - go figure.
Seafood restaurants OK - if you do the tourist areas it's a rip off - if you can talk Chinese and find 'local' it's a breeze.
I thought the beaches were good, clean and not many people about.
Word of advice - do not get between the Russians and the buffet in the hotel.
You used to speak the truth. But now you're clever.

lol... will remember that LT! It's really just for a last minute, final weekend escape before the baby arrives. The minister for war is starting to "expand" so we won't be doing a whole lot. Maybe a round of golf or two, I wouldn't mind going for a dive either.
