Dropped the Cambodia idea due to cost - what about Vietnam. I have no idea on the Geography. Are there any good beach resorts there yet around the Ho Chi Minh area or do you have to take an internal flight. If staying in Ho Chi Minh any good recomendations on Colonial hotels (do NOT want to use a business hotel).

always stay in Omni Saigon hotel

nice pool - goodlooking spa (never went that far though) - good 'irish' pub and not too many tourists as there's a famous brand hotel a few hundred meters down the road. Also plus: the JAL crew has their layover there

Why good? - it's outside of saigon, about 15 mins from the airport. I've learned that wherever you want to go within Saigon, it' s always 20 mins - city center, river, anywhere.

cost me about 100US a night

Hkbloke-I would urge you to visit Cambodia, it really is an amazing place and Ankor Wat is not one of the 7 wonders of the world for nothing.

My experiences are now 5 years old and I know development is now rampaging, but of course if you stay in an Aman resort it will be prohibitively expensive. You will also miss out on a lot of the character of the country as well. Stay in a smaller , preferably family run, hotel and you will have a much better experience.

I'm in Hanoi right now. Lovely place, very chilled. Unfortunately it's raining now so i'm at a pub getting quietly p**sed.
Vietnam isn't famous for its beaches. The ones i've been to near HCMC weren't that nice.

Has Cambodia really changed that much in 5 years? I had a great time in PP and it was really cheap, ditto AW where there were only a few hotels and good value.

Here's a good travel tip: when you go online on a public computer, always remember to log out! There are people out there who would change your MSN signature to 'I shagged a ladyboy, twice" or "I was told I had a small one"....
