Hi there,

was doing some research about Hk and was wondering if anyone knows how many expats are there in HK? and what is their profile like (e.g. no. of australians, no. of americans, where they hang out etc.)
if you dont know the numbers, you know where I can find them?

Thanks

Stephanie - what's your definition of an expat. Do you view Domestic helpers as expats. This will have a significant impact on the numbers and the demograph.

i looked at the hk stats website you guys recommended (thanks!) but no figures on foreign workers, visa or anything like that. and am only looking at "expat" numbers, my definition does not include domestic workers, just those here on a more professional occupation.

Did you find this table?

http://www.info.gov.hk/censtatd/eng/hkstat/fas/01c/cd0052001_index.html

You could try writing to the Census & Statistics Dept to see if they can provide the info you are looking for.

Many with permanent resident id's still consider themselves expats. Do you include them?
Are you interested in the culture or the nationality/immigration classifications?
Where do you put the mixed crowd? Dependents?

When people ask for stats, it helps to tell what they will be used for, what questions are you hoping to answer in your research, or is it purely descriptive?

How can they be here, if they are not working? You mean the spouses of expats? Are expats' household considered expats per se???

Expat is quite simply somebody who lives outside of their native country so whether they are working or not is irrelevant.
