Hi there - new to Hk, stifling in a tiny appartment. I want to join a gym - used to go to step classes at home. Do these local ones have classes or are they just the circuits? I see there is one nearby (California something) any ideas on costs or what to avoid?

err, if it's nearby, how about popping down and asking?

It'd be california fitness, I'd say that google will turn up their website.

Avoid California I would suggest. They are famous for sharp business practices. Plus I hear that their gyms get very crowded.

Whatever you do, bargain your ass off for the best possible deal. Most of them usually try and tie you down on long term contracts though.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

I even, all by myself, thought of popping in and asking, but it helps if you have a wee bit of an idea before you go. I am so used to hearing people think"ah, here comes a woman customer, add on 10 % or whatever" ANd I knew you guys could help!

Yes, the reception of other peoples thought waves are an instinct I was given by my forefathers. But I am asking if any of you ever went to step classes at a gym? I can't hear those replies!

Sorry, I guess not.
Did you check their website for services offered? Maybe even search "step classes+Hong Kong". I'm sure you'll find somewhere round here that offers them.

Well I wandered over to California Fitness as now I was intrigued by all the bad vibes you guys were sending about the place.... Claustrophobic! I did enjoy the agent trying to sell me a membership though.... Think I will stick to hiking and having a cold beer to cool down. Maybe two. Thanks for the help.

Try Pure on the escalator. They have good classes (never been but can hear them from the pec deck) and the prices are average. If you drop me a PM, I can refer you.

Or you can try Phillip Wain in Lee Garden II, exclusively for women, not crowded at all, excellent facilities, the new classes they offer are always the US latest hits, slightly more expensive than the other gyms, though. I am their member.

One in Lee Garden II, the other two in Tsim Sha Tsui and Taikoo Shing. But only for women!! Unless you want to find a job in there...

Generally, California has a number of branches all over Asia, which if you travel can be accessed free by members. They also have all the standard classes, step, spin, boxing, yoga etc etc at no extra charge after you buys your membership. However peak times are busy and they have a reputation for hard selling. Pure are more expensive but good equipment, newer and have similar range of classes. There is also Season's Fitness in ICBC Tower/Plaza which is OK if you work there.

Personally, I prefer California as it is cheaper, it has all the equipment and I can go off-peak hours.

I used to be a member at California Fitness - didn't like it.
Physical is cheaper, not bad. Have been to Philip Wain - The classes are good and you never have to wait for machines or weights. Pure seems a bit expensive to me.
