First become very, very rich. Or discover that you are descended from a New Territories indigenous villager.

Yes but nothing I can type on a family orientated web site.

It might not be what you want to hear, but I think smog has just about nailed it actually.

Money isn't a real issue, (didn't buy the Rolex yet) but i don't understand what he want to say with the indigenous villager.

It means that you need to be able to trace your roots back to one of the original inhabitants of Hong Kong. Or at least to one of those that was set up in a village before the British turned up. This means you have (or may have) land rights.

Thank you so very much about your excellent explanation. Now i understand. But can"t a villager sell the land?

Probably, but you'll never have full rights...

Hannibal, all land in HK is leasehold from the government. "Indigenous villagers" (read: work-shy layabouts) get a special deal, but that may not last forever (fingers crossed).

Isn't there also some lack of clarity about what happens to land after 2047? Does it go back Beijing or summat?

The People's Republic of China owns all the land in Hong Kong, except the land on which St John's Cathedral stands. The Catholic Church is pushed for cash cos of paying off the people it's priests did a Chris Langham on - make them an offer.

It is almost impossible to exaggerate the complete unimportance of almost everything.

No, it's owned by the HK government, and St. John's is the C of E.

But the pope said the catholic church is the only church... (my excuse for being wrong)

And the other part, Article 7 of the Basic Laws states:

quote:
The land and natural resources within the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be State property. The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall be responsible for their management, use and development and for their lease or grant to individuals, legal persons or organizations for use or development. The revenues derived therefrom shall be exclusively at the disposal of the government of the Region.

Or did they change the Basic Law?

(As if...)

They only change The Basic Law when Beijing says they can

Do you want to own the land or simply want to build yer own house?
If it's latter then you can buy a very old village house (or new one if you are rich enough and doesn't think it's a waste), knock it down and rebuild a house with yer own design. Though, the size and height of the house has to be same as the original one.

yup... shazza is right... i've done a bit of research myself.... you can locate an abandoned property.... find out who owns it via a land search and try to contact the owner to sell it to you...

I've found a few i like ... but unable to either find the owner... or get him to agree to sell...

there are loads of old buildings in the sticks (especially where I live....) so i've not given up on my plan yet....

Ah, sorry Claire, I haven't read the Basic Law in ages... I picked up a copy signed by Li Peng and Chris Patten at the book fair though, so looking forward to some snoozeworthy bedtime reading.
