Until now, going to Shenzhen usually meant hopping on the KCR, getting off in Lo Wu, and doing the border formalities. I planned to do that today and saw (which I would have known if I read the newspapers more often) that the train now goes in two directions from Sheung Shui, and it is worth noting which one you're on when you board at Hung Hom or wherever. The new alternative destination is Lok Ma Chau, and with some time in hand I decided to go there and see how it worked.

Fron Sheung Shui the train almost immediately goes underground and then re-emerges with a terrific view of all of Shenzhen, marshes, etc., and winds up at a huge new station with almost no people in it. This meant no delays at all for immigration on either side, though China uses the "yellow" entry form and not the two-page form still in place at Lo Wu. The Shenzhen subway/tube station is right there--just keep going down. The station is Huang Gang. There are only two lines so it is hard to get lost, but for anyone going to Lo Wu (for example) just go two stops to Hui Zhan Zhong Xin, go up an escalator, then down
partway on another one, and transfer to the line going to Lo Wu. All that costs RMB3. Just marginally different than switching at Admiralty.

Now if someone is just planning to go to Lo Wu City, the old way through Lo Wu is still the better choice. But if, like me, you enjoy Dongmen (Lao Jie stop) or other parts of the city, this new terminus is brilliant and for now completely uncrowded. It won't stay that way for long--that's for sure.

sorry, if there is any reason to avoid lok ma chau/huang gang, I'll take it.

I prefer to get on the ferry to shekou or to shenzhen airport, or avoid shenzhen alltogether
