I am a single, female, expat ballet teacher (24 years)from New Zealand.

I am currently looking for an affordable room (long term)as I will be moving to Hong Kong in December.

Any offers or suggestions of nice places to live, preferably on the Island at low cost would be most appreciated.

Thank you
Michele Lee Fletcher

What do you consider affordable? Also, do you want to share or live alone?

OK Michele. I'll try to be a little more constructive.

You're talking about HK Island. What is affordable for you? For me, about HK$8000 is affordable, for which I get a small, clean decent two bed flat in Western district.

However, I have friends paying HK$4-5000 for smaller, older and grubbier places in Sheung Wan. If you are female and new to Hong Kong (i.e. not aware of the standards of older buildings) then I don't think you'd want one of these.

If you are willing to share, and don't have loads of possessions then your best bet might be to get a room in a larger flat with one or two others. You should be able to do this for HK$4-5000/month no problem.

Check HK magazine when you arrive and also the flatshare section of www.asiaxpat.com (is it allowed to post that here?!!).

If you have nowhere to stay initially, you may be able to get a monthly rate in a hotel for HK$7000 or so while you are looking.

If you are willing to commute 45-60 minutes then you can get a small nice place in New Territories for HK$4000 no problem.

Michelle,
just to add to cerne post to rent your own place you will need 3 months cash paid in advance (2 months deposit and first month in advance).

For sharing most (but not all) would accept one months deposit + plus one month in advance.

Affordable really depends on your work location, if your based in central/wanchai affordable means longer travelling times.

in which district will you be working?

Try a serviced unit in causeway bay for the first two months, find your feet (or back "montendiu") and then look st sharing or renting your own. One good thing about HK is you can choose to live and work the oppositte to the peak hour traffic flow and you will find commuting more enjoyable.

I deleted them because a) they had nothing to do with the thread, and b) some of the things being said were frankly offensive. A very poor attempt to be funny i suspect.

Perhaps time to remind everyone why we started hkexpats (and why we are investing our time and money keeping it going). It's all about trying to provide a valuable resoource for expats in Hong Kong and at the same time raising money for people who are less fortunate than we are.

And no we are NOTHING like across the street because we are doing this for the benefit of others and not for the benefit of our own wallets.

If anyone thinks it would be a laugh to try and compromise what we are trying to achieve then I would love them to post here and explain why. The floor is yours.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. As I do not know anyone in Hong Kong I think it would be nice to stay in an apartment with some english speaking expats so I don't get to isolated/lonely.

Anyone looking for a flatmate?
