Interested in hearing peoples opinions about their favourite club... either one they've visited or are a member of.

Here's a basic guide: if you have $$$, then there is HK Country Club, HK Football Club, Ladies Recreation, Aberdeen Boat Club, HK Yacht Club and so on. If you want more value: Mariners Club (TST), YMCA, South China Athletic Club (the latter have great facilities) There are also some interesting clubs like the JCC, but then again you must be Jewish, however I am told it has some of the best facilities in HK.

Aberdeen Boats club (not Marina club) is great value.
But the biggest factor on choice is if you have kids. If not then go for a Social club like FCC. In fact if you have no kids (and your apartment has a pool) then i would question the whole point of joining a club.

mbd i disagree, the aberdeen boat club, and hong kong yacht club are not requiring you to have too many $$$$ they are both quite cheap to become a member off and offer good sailing activities

i have never been a "club" person in HK, so I can't appreciate what you are prepared to pay. But anything more than $2000 as an entrance fee seems steep to me. I agree with HK Bloke and that is to question the point of joining a club. However some use them for socialising and empire building. I have one friend of the yacht club but he never uses the facilities because no one likes him there. Other friends can only go on weekends when everyone else is there and there are huge traffic jams like the ones caused by the club on the south side of the island near ocean park (sorry dunno the name.)

traffic jams caused by HK yacht clubbers? hah.....no i dont think so , however middle island what your refering to is a great club house.....
and yes clubs dont come cheap, however if you use it, which is what its all about. just like buying a tv and never using it........same issue

If you go for a playing membership they are considerably cheaper, but you need to be good enough in your chosen sport to be accepted.

it is not about good enough or not. one can join as long as you have a proven interest in the sport.
not every yacht club member is a sailor.....
many members just start sailing when they join

OK, then I guess they are different. Taking the HKFC, if you wish to be a playing member of (say) the football, rugby or squash representative sides, you do need to be able to play to a certain standard. If you are not good enough you can still join the club as a social member, but it costs much more. I would guess the same goes for KCC, HKCC and others.

the traffic jam is on the "south side of the island near ocean park". i think it is the merrycan club or the hk country club. (don't get into the food delivery business!!!)

mdb - depends which entrance to ocean park. If it's the rear one it would be the AMC (but don't remember it being bad for traffic). The HK Country Club is near ocean park but not near the entrance. There are often traffic jams with all the Tai Tai's trying to turn right into the club but stopping to answer their mobiles.

Any Americans here? The American Club's not bad. Two premises: one in Central and another in Tai Tam.
