I'm looking to rent a car for a couple of weeks at Christmas. Can anyone recommend a website which compares the best car hire rates?
Right now, the best deal is looking like Easycar - GBP280 for 15 days - anyone have any good or bad experiences with them?

you can contact avis or hertz here in hk, prepaid rates are very competitive (my experience for germany/france/belgium)
for last minutes (my usual do) I often use http://www.novacarhire.com/car-hire/

They're offering a Ford Focus or similar for the price mentioned above. In fact, this seems to be the going rate as I've tried a few now, plus geraldo's rec.

The most important thing in my experience is to book it at least a month ahead - the rates go up dramatically at the 30 day mark. Otherwise the prices tend to be similar and I tend to be swayed more by things like the convenience of the pick-up/drop-of, which companies have free upgrades with whatever cards I have, and so on...

Giant... Easycar run their business the same as they run their airline.. very low budget with lots of hidden extras
Just bear in mind that fully covered insurance etc you will have to pay extra for... their excess tends to be more if anything goes wrong.. and a minor scratch or door dent can cost you and arm and a leg
My two cents is read the small print before going with them.... there are lots of hidden extra's

Well I've now booked a Ford Focus Zetec 1.6 with National, all inclusive 16 days for GBP282, with no need to pay up front.
That's a decent car, and I've used them before with no hassles so hopefully it should be OK. Excess for all the companies seemed to be around GBP600-650.

Re excess charges for hire cars.... Having had Avis try to stitch me up with a GBP600 excess charge for a dent already on the car (that 'delivery in hirer's absence with keys left under the wheel' stunt), I took out an insurance policy recommended by a Daily Telegraph travel columnist: insurance4carhire.com. Although it's galling having to fork out more dosh for something that's already expensive, for an extra GBP60 per year I (plus my partner) am apparently covered against excess charges worldwide for any hire period of up to 30 days with any hire car company. Haven't had to claim yet, so can't say what they're like when it comes down to it, but as we hire cars quite a lot each year it has given us peace of mind and now I really don't give a toss if I have to park a car in some vandal-infested dump in Britain.

Coaster lesson learnt with hire car companies always check over the car fully and report any dents before you leave the forecourt
