For those of you married to Filipinos... [ New Topic]

I'm trying to work out what will be the best way of making extended (i.e. >21 day) stays in The Philippines once Mrs smog and I are married. It seems to me that I have 3 options:

1. a 12 month multi-entry visa (not sure how many days per stay this has)
2. an Immigrant visa (we have property in our joint names there, so it should be possible even though in fact HK would remain our primary residence)
3. taking Philippines dual nationality

Has anyone been down this road and looked at the various pros and cons: (income & travel) tax implications, consular protection, cost of paperwork, etc? I'd appreciate any thoughts anyone has on this. Happy to do it in PM if you prefer.

Thanks.

How about a retirement visa? I'm not sure that you actually have to be retired to qualify.

TCAG,

Thanks for the idea - wasn't aware of that one, but it seems to be designed for people without other links to The Philippines (and requires money deposits and so on).

There you go--- you can also make money by doing some direct investment on shore.

Yes - but I already have my direct investments onshore in the form of properties jointly owned by Mrs smog and me. I don't really want to tie up more cash over there at the moment.

i was under the impression that if ur married to a phil national if you enter with her you can get a balikbayan visa.... 12 month stay....
Other way is just to request extra stay when you arrive at the VIP section at phil immigration... you pay 750 pesos extra i believe.....

Ah - excellent - wasn't aware that balikbayan privileges extended to foreign spouses... A quick Google confirms it though. Thanks.

The only problem is that I would have to enter the country at the same time as Mrs smog, which might not always be practical, but at least I know about this option now.

Probably, but I'd rather do it by the book if it's not too onerous.

In other countries, they choose to call them “Mistress” --at least a wife can be entitled for more than just being a concubine. Others may have different opinions, I personally cant imagine myself with more than one wife --- Wife means real obligations, however there are no contractual obligations with mistresses or girlfriends.

I usually send the fambily on their own. I've only managed to last as long as KT (2 wks)!

Can't u get a month visa everytime? My kids and missus just went for 1 month. Kids are on UK passports - didn't need any special visa.

to be, or not to be, what was the question?

Default on a UK passport (like most) is 21 days. But if they're her kids and she has proof with her then they can get the 1-year as mentioned above just by asking it seems.

Most people I know that have lived there 10+ years survive on tourist visas. Don't get hung up about it.

I'm available to write reviews of bars as long as they are s**t holes.
