Fresh of CNN.

HONG KONG, China (AP) -- A flotilla of U.S. warships carrying as many as 8,000 American sailors was refused entry to Hong Kong's port, the U.S. Navy said Thursday, in an unusual twist to relations strained by disputes over trade and Iran's nuclear program.

The USS Kitty Hawk, pictured in 2001 during Operation Enduring Freedom, is among the flotilla.

China watchers said it was the first time they had heard of a ship being turned away from Hong Kong waters, although during periods of tense China-U.S. relations Beijing had refused requests for U.S. ships to make port calls to the former British colony.

The Kitty Hawk and its support vessels, including a nuclear fast attack submarine, were expected to dock in Hong Kong's deep water port Wednesday morning for a four-day visit.

But the group had been refused entry, Lt. Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost told The Associated Press by telephone from Hawaii.

There's gonna be a whole load of dissappointed Filipinas down at the acre and an urgent crisis in tissue shortage on board the USS Kitty Hawk.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China refused permission for a U.S. aircraft carrier and accompanying vessels to visit Hong Kong for a long-planned Thanksgiving holiday visit -- and then changed its mind.

"We have decided to allow the Kitty Hawk to stay in Hong Kong during Thanksgiving," spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference.

"It is a decision based on humanitarian considerations only."

When's Thanksgiving?

A former colleague nearly had breakdown on Thanksgiving - first time away from mommy and poppy on that day. WFT? The woman was about 30 and there she was sobbing! Just as well she resigned and went home to momsie and popsie before Crimble otherwise I would have felt a good slapping was in order.

It is almost impossible to exaggerate the complete unimportance of almost everything.

Sounds like a fire sale about to happen at Fenwicks.

Someone asked me the other day what I was doing for Thanksgiving. I found the question most confusing.

I'm having some noodles and a bottle of Tsingtao judging by the contents of the fridge.

What are they thanking for? Is it harvest festival sans corn dollies or is it about the native Americans giving them provisions only to be amusingly wiped out later?

Sailors, they remind me of albatrosses--they spend most of their time at sea, and only coming to land to reproduce.

Star News just reported that while China reversed its earlier decision in order to allow the Kitty Hawk etc into HK, a brewing typhoon is forcing the ships to depart early for their next destination.

Who knows, eh.

I'm actually quite pleased. I'm off to Quarterdeck tonight, and last time they were here it was like walking through a youth club every time I went to the loo.
