An elderly Italian man killed his wife, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for eight years, with three gunshots in a local hospital in Rome's Tuscan town, media reported Monday. ¡¡

The 77 year old man, whose name was not given by police, had been told ealier on Saturday that his wife, 82, was in the final stages of the disease.

The former traffic policeman, who 'couldn't stand seeing her suffering,' returned Saturday afternoon with a pistol to the ward where his wife was a patient.

He then covered her forehead and chest with towels and shot her three times, in the face and heart with the presence of other patients and staff, police said.

He was arrested immediately. It was not clear what charges he would face.

Here's my question. Given the same situation, would you have done the same thing?

Did the wife consent to the killing? Or was she too ill to indicate one way or the other?

what do you think? we never know if his wife agrees or not. but i do think even the man, he feels so sad for doing so. i don't mean regret. i understand the feeling of the man is quite complicated. He shot his wife because of love not angry.

for me, if i were the wife, i don't want my husband to suffer from me. I definitely let him do so. If I could choose the way I die, I would have never chosen to lie on the bed for more than a week. Die in peace.

When we talk about the quality of life, can anybody tell me what's the point of lying on the bed and do nothing?

But wasn't the lady of the lamp better known for nursing her patients, not shooting them?

Her patients were physically ill not mentally ill.

His wife was ga-ga.

I saw my grandfather die over a period of 7 years - going from a strong, proud bloke - not well educated but sharp and a good caring union man - into a vegetable; crapping, p**sing and dribbling with nothing of his personality left.

I'll take euthanasia every time.

You used to speak the truth.

Only the family members can feel it. When you feel a vegetable who is one of your family members, your heart is deeply broken. My dad is undergoing such situation now. Nothing I can do only visiting him every day. Feeling hopeless and helpless. If the doctor tells us no more hope, my mum and I will agree to let him go freely. But we can't choose. We are not doctors. Don't want to see him in this situation. He was a very good caring man. He loves us a lot. He is the best dad in the world.
