Walking in Causeway Bay today trying to talk on the phone, I just could not stop thinking how much nicer this city would be without those noisy smelly double-decker buses. It's just so wrong that the government lets them run parellel to the MTR line, that's absolute waste.

The whole bus network should be scrapped and built from scratch as a feed system to rail line only, and the whole fleet should be replaced by with something more quiet and less smelly. Takes a lot of money sure but we'll have plenty of it here if we don't fall into the trap of building more Cyberports and Disneylands.

I could imagine Li Ka-shing thinking the same thing, as his limousine is delayed by all these buses every day. Why can't everybody just use their Benzes and Beemers? If they don't have a car then they should stay on the MTR and leave the streets to car owners.

Nothing against buses in general, but the bus system in HK seems to be fooked up. General road tolls should be introduced too. Li-Ka Shing should love 'em too as they would keep the Toyotas off the streets of Central.

FYI, the new double-deck buses on HK's roads are some of the cleanest in the world... up to Euro 4 emission standards I believe.

I agree that road tolls should be introduced, but the government won't even consider the idea. I have lost count of the number of times my bus journey from Sai Ying Pun to Central has taken 45 minutes because of one BMW-driving twat who has stopped his car across an intersection. I think roads like Des Voeux should be for public transport only.

You obviously don't use buses or the MTR to commute - the MTR is running at full load in the rush hour and it would be monumentally inconvenient to, for example, have to change bus-MTR-bus to do journeys which are currently bus only. The bus system here is one of the best in the world, and pretty well thought out in terms of the route maps.

Or we can all move to Alaska. There's too many taxis as well and they are too cheap, esp. for short trips. I remember reading it's been tough to reduce those MTR parallel bus routes as they are most profitable for bus co's and they fight to keep them.

I'll let my sister-in-law know that next time we have a family dinner which involves moving the kids and picking up her 7x year old father and mother in her mini van because they cannot walk very far especially that instead of being a good daughter she is in fact pretentious because some stupid import says so.

Yes, for the average expatriate who lives on the north shore of hong kong island and whose two dimensional life revolves around drinking and the mid levels escalator I would agree, but, my sanctimonious friend with imported superiority complex syndrome, not everybody neatly fits within the limited box your mind clearly cannot see beyond.

How come 50% of buses are almost empty then even around knocking off time.

Yes of course I am.

I did reread. It read to me anyone who might justify why they have a car is a pretentious w***er.

I agree with you - many of the car journeys undertaken in Hong Kong are unnecessary but for many people with multi-generational family here (even if in my case they are inlaws but they are my family), or who live off the MTR lines, and for many other reasons, sometimes public transport is not the answer no matter how much able bodied types think it is.

Because many of the buses are near the end of their routes. The last couple of stops on any route the bus will always be empty, and there are many routes which terminate somewhere between Causeway Bay and Central.

For example, in the mornings I often catch the #40 bus, which starts in Wah Fu, comes round through the mid-levels and ends up at Wanchai ferry pier. By the time it reaches me on Robinson Road it is often absolutely crush-loaded at peak hours, and I've never seen it less than about 40% full at any time. But the vast majority of the people either get out at the Cheung Kong Centre or at Admiralty MTR which means that when you see it on Hennessy Road doing the last couple of stops to Wanchai Ferry Pier it appears quite sparsely populated. But you can't stop every single bus at one place (Admiralty) there simply isn't room to turn them all round there.

For example, most of the buses from Pok Fu Lam etc. could have been planned to load their passengers to Sheung Wan MTR station.

With a result that:
a) the people have to make at least one and maybe two changes if where they are going is not on the MTR
b) it will be impossible to get on the MTR in Admiralty because it is packed from Sheung Wan

a) yep, sure, but that's natural.
b) MTR believes it can build more capacity by increasing frequency. The evidence is the plans for south Island line that will also feed more passengers to the system.

Sure there should be some bus lines that reach places where MTR doesn't, but a big part of the current bus system is bringing people to/from MTR or places close to MTR stations, yet it's not planned at all like a proper feeding system to MTR.

And on your scheme I would have to catch a bus from mid-levels to Admiralty MTR than faff about to go down onto the MTR to go one stop to Wanchai. That would be a real pain in the neck, and I would simply get a taxi each morning instead, thereby defeating your purpose entirely.
