I've been given an invite to a chinese wedding and enclosed with it, is a voucher for some Maxims cake. I dont particualry want to go (as I barely know this person and am also reluctant to give them the standard 500+ bucks - the previous use of my 500 buck donation at a chinese wedding later became apparent in the form of a Golf Gti for the groom).

So, how do I decline graciously and more importantly, what do I do with this cake ticket?

It's a bit annoying as people in Hong Kong will still pay a couple of hundreds to the couple even without attending the wedding but you can take advantage of being a gweilo and ignore that tradition if you want to. It would be more considerate for her to ask you before giving you the invite.

As for the Maxims voucher, get yerself some tarts from there.

...but if you decline, don't you still have to give them the cash? Isn't that the whole point of these things?

Please transfer 500 bucks to Paps bank account. And the Maxims tickets... you could send it to my home address.
Thank you very much. Solved.

nah spanner, don't give them the money, then those insensitive ppl in the office will know and won't send you invites without asking again. it's not rude... they should learn.

as for the cake coupon, like shazza said, get yourself some tarts!

Ask yourself one simple question, Spanner ~ do you give a flying f**k what this person (who you barely know) thinks of you?

I received another wedding invitation yesterday - as usual it's some bugger I hardly know who reckons that I won't atttend but will send over some cash.

I'm going to start sending invites to my wedding out - it were in '96 but I see no problem in back dating begging letters.

You used to speak the truth.
But now you're clever.

That's because some of us didn't even get an invitation.

I am painfully sincere. It is one of my greatest failings.

I've declined her invite and told her the cakes were great.
