I guess there's some truth in it, although it's undoubtedly exaggerated.
Many species eat afterbirth / placentas since they are undoubtedly very high in nutrients and it would be wasteful if you were an animal in an environment where food is scarce to waste that much. Some also eat still born young for the same reason. A few also eat live born children in some circumstances (probably linked to food supplies).
None of these really applies in China currently though.
And the whole argument about stem-cell research rages because it is clear that cells from embryos have huge potential for use in treatments for a wide range of degenerative illnesses.

I think it's b*****ks. There may be very very rare cases but every culture has a few weirdoes - remember that German dude a year or two back who ate a guy that had answered an advert - the advert being for a guy who wanted to be eaten - they started off sharing the blokes dick before the canibalee committed (assisted?) suicide and was then eaten by the canibeler.
It's always got a bit of 'oh those crazy ashuns' these type of stories off th' net - if you go through a few of the funny picture sites they will credit weird piccies with coming from China - even if clearly say there is Korean writing visible in the picture.
You used to speak the truth.

I remember this story when it first appeared in 1995. Claims were that foetuses (feti?) were being smuggled across the border from HK to China as well. None of it was ever substantiated... and the Eastern Express went down the gurgler fairly sharp-ish too, so that should be some indication of how seriously to take any story that ever appeared in it.
