Would you trust an agent to rent your flat if you are moving on from HK? [ New Topic]

It seems to go on and on...

The problem is that my contract expires in September. I want to stay here another few years, and my employer says he is 'optimistic' that he will renew my contract, but is not sure (he is not the only one who will decide). I believe that my chances are above 60%.
If I wait until August before buying a flat I will probably pay 400,000 more, and won't really be able to afford anything nice.
If I buy now I might have to sell in August (maybe at a profit, but not sure)... or rent it to someone. If this someone pays my mortgage (which seem possible looking at the rents in this area) for a couple of years before I decide to sell, won't it be a good deal?

But: would you trust an agent? They don't seem very honest to me. I can ask a colleague to check every now and then, but my colleagues are very busy, so I can't bother them too much. Do you know of anybody who is renting his flat while not in HK? What are the experiences? Or nobody does it because the agents are just too dishonest?

Thanks a lot.

You would just use a property management company such as Iglu and pay them around 10% ... they look after it fine

Thanks. I didn't know of Iglu. 10% of the rental fee, isn't it? Do you know personally that they do a good, honest job?
Also, i noticed they don't have any flat for rent in New Territories. Maybe they wouldn't be interested in my flat? Would agencies like Centaline or Kingswood do a decent job, or are they a bit shaky?

No, I am not married.
Are you looking for a boyfriend by any chance? If you are attractive, slim, tall, intelligent, can cook (European food), fun, exciting, hard working, and not whiny... I am the man for you!

I understand the banks have a limited "property management" i.e. they offer rental collection services, I read recently that Hang Seng Bank charges minimum HK$500 / month.

It would be overly simple to consider all property agents as crooks. There must be a few decent ones out there who value reputation and long term business relationships over short term gain?

Rastaman> If your property is in DB, I can recommend a reliable agent who would go the extra mile to take care of your property.

My estate agent was absolutely brilliant. Didn't show me any s**te; negotiated hard on my behalf; helped me sort out the utility bill and gave me a discount on the final bill.

She just works for one of the smaller agencies but with a tie-up with Centaline.
