take a boat to the Gili islands.
We stayed in Gili Meno for a few days, brilliant reef for snorkeling, at night as well for next to nothing

we stayed in Gili Meno, 50m from the beach in a traditional house for about 40hkd a night. As soon as the little one is old enough we'll go back there for sure

How do you get there and what do you get for $40 a night?

I'd head for the East of the Island, particularly around Nusa Dua. Lot better than rowdy Kuta! Have a word with AKA, I think he may have done some diving there a few months ago.

What the f*ck have you done lately?

we flew to lombok, drove across the island and then spend 20 mins in a boat.
It's no Hilton, Marriot or Shangri La, it was a traditional style house, big room, big bed, old style bog, mosquito infested, and you live with nature, meaning breakfast at 5or 6 and we get to sleep when it gets dark.
There were 'real' hotels, probably for a tad more, but I really enjoyed that place away from all the rest. If you're a bit adventurous, just go without booking.

"brilliant reef for snorkeling" sounds so nice. Where is that ? And how to get there ? Is there fresh water to clean up youself at the beach ? Do they serve lunch ??

I never been to Bali. Will stay 2 nites in Kuta beach and 4 nites in "Seminyak"

.... HK$40 a nite ?! ?! I see it now in the internet but in US dollars .............................. which year did you stay there ?!

Lots of decent diving operators around the East side of the island - Amed beach and surroundings.
Most of them are PADI certified, and therefore have properly trained and certified instructors, both local and foreign.
2 wrecks (1 japanese, 1 US) turned artificial reefs just offshore, relatively undeep.

Hotel rooms range from 28 - 40 US$ a night, depending on what you want/need.
We had very nice rooms for US$ 28.00 a night recently.

Only 1 "But".... Amed is 2.5 hours drive from the airport.

.
The problem with instant gratification is that it takes too bloody long...

2 nites we'll stay in a cheap hotel, but to my suprise that looks pretty good over the internet. Rest will stay in a villa, I never been to Bali, I excited for this trip !

2.5 hrs drive .................... hmmmmm...... i think we may not do diving but just snorkeling, anywhere a bit closer ?? I stay in Kuta and Seminyak.

How about the safty issue ? I guess just need to avoid the American hotel chain should do ??!!

The most dangerous things you can do or could happen are likely to be:
- drive anywhere, particularly on a motorcycle
- cross any roads
- go diving
- go snorkelling
- go swimming
(any of the above more so when you have had a couple of drinks)
- an earthquake / natural disaster

The risk of being involved in a terrorist attack (if I understand your misplaced fear correctly) is much less than any of these.

Ohhh Foth, I've had a brilliant idea for how you can while away your idle hours out there in the sticks ~ please please please put together a lovely pie chart or something with arrows and illustrations to show the relative chances of being killed by diving/driving/being eaten by a shark/hit by a meteor/choking on an ice cube in a vodka cranny/trampled by a stampeding horde of koala bears/etc while on holiday. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease...

My idle hours are nearly over for a while, whilst you're waiting I would strongly recommend this book by Bruce Schneier:

The book must be something very helpful for the trip.

You missed out
- Stepping on a syringe on kuta beach
- Getting food poisoning from that unwashed salad you ate whilst trying to avoid the meat.

No really - it's an excellent read.

An interesting snippet... did you know that in the United States in 2001 (the year of 9/11) more people died from malnutrition than from terrorist attacks? And 13 times as many people died in road traffic accidents.
(Source: Schneier, Beyond Fear p238.)

And another:
quote:
Nokia spends about a hundred times more on battery security than on communications security. The security system senses when a consumer uses a third-party battery and switches the phone to maximum power consumption mode; the point is to ensure that consumers buy only Nokia batteries.
(Source: Schneier, Beyond Fear p39.)

He doesn't also mention that this is almost certainly the reason Nokia phones with dodgy batteries in have a habit of catching fire/exploding: the phone is deliberately hammering the battery beyond its design limit.

I'd like to see if Mr Schneier's reasoned thinking on risk extends to those associated with smoking fags, or more specifically, to the disproportionate hysteria around second hand smoke.

At a quick look, there's nothing in the index on that.

Personally the problem I have with second-hand smoke is nothing to do with the health risks (which I accept are pretty small compared to, for example, the damage I choose to do to myself with alcohol) - I simply find it uncomfortable and unpleasant to be in a smoky environment, and annoying to have to launder immediately everything I was wearing there. In the same way that I wouldn't want to spend an evening in, say, a sewage farm, I have no desire to spend an evening in a smoky bar.
