ffs if the whole of China can do it why did PnS fall at the first fence.

The Chinese government says it is banning shops from handing out free plastic bags from June this year, in a bid to curb pollution.
Production of ultra-thin plastic bags will also be banned, the State Council said in a statement.

Instead, people will be encouraged to use baskets or reusable cloth bags for their shopping, the council said.

The move comes amid growing concern about pollution and environmental degradation in China.

China was using huge quantities of plastic bags each year, the State Council, China's cabinet, said in its directive, posted on the main government website.

"Plastic shopping bags, due to reasons such as excessive use and inefficient recycling, have caused serious energy and resources waste and environment pollution," it said.

so i wonder what i gotta use to dispose of my rubbish, re-useable cloth bags maybe? hahaha good one, lets start to look at the real problem first, a plastic bag doesnt necesarily make the worst of it, buit for example how some things are packaged for sales should be looked at.

sample:
a simple dvd, 1st of all the box is 2 times bigger then normal needed to store a cd, 2nd its wrapped in plastic to add a paper which shows whats in it, then theres the carton box that slides over it with exact the same picture on it, then its wrapped in tight plastic again, and then the store wrapped it in a plastic sheetagain in order to add a detection device.....thats what i call is the culprit to pollution! and not a single shopping bag used to carry it home and used again to dispose of garbage

apart from that i cant imagine that its so hard to with todays technology create a shopping bag of natural products which degrades over lets say 3 years.

kt - it does not mention black garbage bags - it talks about the free plastic bags handed out by supermarkets etc i.e. the bags PnS tried to stop but failed miserably.

Bloke i understand what you are saying, but lets se i live in a HK flat, black garbage bags are same harmful as the small shopping bags, and to that comes we cant use black garbage bags because they dont fit in a chute!

since they are same harmful, i now have to stop using my PNS bag to dispose waste, and instead go buy plastig bags with its sole purpose for dispoing garbage, which means they will only be used one time.

I use the free plastic bags as my garbage bags. If they stop handing them out, I'll have to start buying bin liners for the rubbish.

Does anyone else find though that after the checkout girl has packed you bag for you here, you can always reduce the number used by quickly re-packing them?

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Why not do as i do and pack the bags yourself rather than stand there doing sweet fa whilst the girls zaps your groceries AND packs them for you thus holding up the next people in the queue.

Why don't they just hand out biodegradable bags? It isn't like the two major supermarket chains have any competition in HK are short of a bob or two - they can afford that cost and the advertising of how f' eco friendly they are will no doubt be something they play on for all it is worth and then some..
The bags given out free are used for rubbish disposal and if they are biodegradable - most excellent eh?

Anarchist governments eh?

I usually do, but some of them with the extra bag packer standing there get a bit upset with you when you try that. Worst is when they get round to scanning your stuff before you've emptied you basket onto the belt. By the time you get to the bags they've already got 10 items in 6 bags

Talking of holding up the queue to the woman in front of me on Sunday afternoon in PnS ffs, if you've stood 15 mins in the queue, watched all your stuff get scanned and packed at least have your purse in you hand ready, not just start rummaging in your handbag after the total shows.

I'm with KT on the excess layers of plastic being the problem on items not necessarily the carrier bag itself.

thats like sticking yer head in sand, the black bags are also not biodegraeable, and they will in this case be used only 1 time.
and BTW no i am not too lazy to go down andf carry my garbage there if that would help, but fact is it doesnt help.

What I don't get is why a corporation can profit from a consumer but a consumer has to pay to get the s**t sorted out?
Isn't that just a f**king bit of tinsel wrapped around the c**k f**king us all up the ass?

btw the quote "free bags" is also a whole load of b*****ks as its a service well calculated into the prices, or do they now also provide free airconditioning and free lighting in the shops?

i'd say compulsory bio degrdeable bags, and next set a list of standrads for packaging and which ever company violates these standards in a wasteful manner gets slapped with a special tax per piece of product sold packaged like that

I quite like those vulgar red and green bags they charge 5 bucks for - they hold a lot and are quite easy to drape on my shoulders
