That's true KT but from the initial post one would infer that that isn't the case this time; key words were Disco Bay, husband working in Central, wanting a maid, kindergarten....
Average by Intention.

The monkey makes a good point about housing allowance...
The tax calculator at http://www.ird.gov.hk/eng/ese/st_comp_2007_08/stcfrm.htm shows that married with two kids on HK$50K straight salary then your annual tax bill would be HK$40,500, but with, say, HK$20K defined and used as Housing Allowance your tax bill would be HK$6,270. (In this case your "salary would be entered as $360K per year and the taxable value of the property is HK$36,000 per year).
If HK$25K is defined and used for rent then your total tax bill is HK$600.
If HK$15K then the tax bill is HK$17040.

Em... so your saying that you would be happy living on 25K a month in your current situation now to pay all of the below
All bills & rent Maid Kindy Car Holiday's to visit the folks Nice food for the weekend The odd meal out The odd drink out
Somehow I don't think I could make it through the month on that with two kids but then I may be way off with my calculations

Paps you need to take off the rent bit...

No rent, with the housing allowance in the tax, it actually gives you 20K a month....Maybe its all down to how/if you budget, or if you just spend what you have. You know exactly the lifestyle I have, and think you would agree i am not struggling. Its all relative, the only difference being, they would not have anything left, whereas most of the rest of us would be saving the rest.

And the car, certainly if you're living in DB.

Spanner,... doesn't it depend what kind of lifestyle they currently have? Either they need a change and it is their only option, or it is a same/higher salary but in a warmer place. Who knows.
One thing I have become more aware of recently, life is not all about the cash. Its who you spend it with that makes the difference.

25k might be a garden flat, or a very spacious one at least. I'm sure you can get cheaper than that, but you need to go and find out yourself. Even in the older phases there are very nice flats, just go out and look. I'll definitely recommend DB.
As said many a times here, find a serviced apartment or a hotel room for a few weeks. Might want to leave the kids back in the uk for a week or so as well
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who can read binary and those who don't
