What's interesting in the Indian example is the idea of mob rape (in contrast with gang rape). In a big enough crowd, the men are confident enough to do anything. In China there is a parallel with rioting and occupying factories, etc. Don't stick your neck out, don't make trouble - unless everyone else is doing it.

In western society, I think, the size of such a crowd would rarely, if ever, reach critical mass.

Unrelated: I've often thought that in the middle ages, a very large proportion of sex must have been forced.

India has certain long rooted, unwritten norms which every person is expected to follow by the society which otherwise make it hard to live in the society. For Eg: All married women with the Sindhoor on her forehead is expected tho nobody is going to cut the head off if they see a plain Forehead. The same way, open sexual interests are not appreciated by the society. So naturally the collective frustrations of people (especially men) will result in the situations like that. One small start and umpteen volunteers rush in to grab their share, added to this, the mood of NY and Boozing made it worse.

There are 1,000 s of incedendts like that which vanishes in the dark side with out any sound!

I was just telling his lips a secret!!!

I suggest a disguise:

You would stand out like a sore thumb in most places as most Indian women do not wear these outfits.

Where did you get 1 out of 69 being reported on? It would be pretty hard to get estimates by doing surveys because of reluctance to report or talk about it.
