How early can one safely fly from CAN (Guangzhou) if departing from HK Island side the same morning? Experiences?

You mean you have a flight out of CAN and you are worried about connecting times?

Sorry, I was looking at some holiday flight options and there seemed to be one cheap connection from CAN at 9:30am or so... but I've got no idea how to get my ass over there that time of the morning, should be there already 8:00am I suppose. Gotta stay overnight I guess?

Geraldo flies from Shenzhen fairly regularly, hopefully he'll be online later and elaborate...
. The problem with instant gratification is that it takes too bloody long...

you can always get there by train if the airfare discount is substantial!!!
I took the train once and I wasn't bad, the trip is about 2hrs if I remember correctly.

As Nas says, just hop on the Express through-train from Hung Hom straight to GZ, then taxi to airport. Best just to book a train seat at any CTS if that's the route you're going to take.
What the f*ck have you done lately?

not a chance; the 7.30 arrives in Guangzhou after 9, I think you can get a long way with the subway but haven't tried that yet. A crazy cabbie can take you from the station to the airport in less than 40mins, still too late. If you insist on same day hassle, get to lowu with the first mtr and then the (slower) train from shenzhen to guangzhou, you'll get to guangzhou by 8 and then even have time to get a shuttle bus (20RMB). Suggest you explore this route once before as you can't afford to miss a connection. Also great route to do with loads of luggage! I would take the last train the day before and have a quiet night (or not) in Guangzhou. You get ok hotels for 300RMB, and with luck a shuttle bus to the aiport included or for a small fee.
If I get the very first MTR from TC in the morning I can make an 8am flight in Shenzhen, but again - much better to leave late the night before, and stay 250m from Shenzhen airport for 200RMB, get up at 7, have brekkie and stroll to the airport.
Where do you want to fly to?

Cheers Geraldo, that closes it, doable in theory but too close call, staying overnight is better if you need to catch an early flight. Where do I want to fly to? Everywhere!
