Hey I am new to this forum so hi everyone...
I am heading to the Philippines for a few weeks and was wondering if anyone could offer advise of where to go and what to do. I am not interested in Manila at all, I am kind of looking for some island retreats- any ideas?
Many thanks

there's about 7000 of them, have fun :) I can't believe anyone is interested in Manila either.
you want to travel on budget/backpacker style. travel around or stick somewhere? Or are you looking for 7star resorts ?
It's hard hitting and across two legs. No, it's not Craig Bellamy's golf club, it's the champions league semi-finals

Geraldo - you're a Cebu expert - and my missus (being from the Phils) highly recommends the place! I've not been tho - last time I was in the Phils, I was running from mountain guys with guns (NOT brokeback mountain guys)!
to be, or not to be, what was the question?

that's cebu hospitals expert, you tool
anyway, if i was to do a holiday there, i would indeed avoid Manila at all costs, even for a stopover in the middle of the night;
Cebu itself and Mactan island is also too busy/expensive for me. Last holiday in Cebu we went up to Bogo, about 100k north of Cebu, and found a nice little resort-ish style thing. Very local, very cheap and friendly, very relaxing (basically f**k all to do). Little further up was a village called san Remigio, from there many ferries sail to neighboring islands, and from there you can go on and on.
If you're for a motorcycle holiday, I can't wait to do one in Davao Oriental - magnificent nature, friendly people, and still very little tourists.

How about a few days in Puerto Galera? It's two hours from Manila to Batangas, then a ferry ride. Stay in Sabang or White Beach depending on how lively you want it. Great diving - day or liveaboard - and scenery, though a tad scruffy (adds to the charm IMHO). You can rent motorbikes and see the area. There's even a little 9 hole golf course. It may be busy at Chinese New Year. You can then overland via Calapan and catch a boat to Boracay.
Baguio and Palawan I have no personal experiene of, but would be sure to include if I had a few weeks. I heard you can also dive with whale sharks near Legaspi.

Bloke, That looks awesome!!! I've just found this website which looks pretty good. www.bancasafaris.com it looks like they organise island hopping trips on a 'Banca' some sort of traditional boat... It looks pretty cool anyway. I wonder if they go to the resort you mentioned. I am going to check it out.
Thanks again everyone

amanpuru is a private island with the resort on it. I do not believe it is included in any island hopping. You have to fly to manila and then take a 1 hour flight south on the resorts twin-prop plane.

if you want adventure fly from Manila to the island of Palawan, no 3,4, or 5 star hotels mind you. Then take your pick, head down east or west coast (I went down east side) plenty of unexploited beaches, clear water and bamboo huts to crash along the way. Don't bother if you are in a hurry most of these places have one bus per day (if you are lucky) and leave plenty of spare time in your schedule to get your flight back :)
