Kindness on the streets of HK?? [ New Topic]

I was just on the way to buy Mc D's on Queens Rd - had to walk up a flight of stairs...Stopped at the top to put my cig in the ashtray and as I turned around, I noticed an old, frail man had started 'collapsing' 1/2 way up the stairs.

A couple of local peeps stood staring - or just walked on by as the old codger, bent over, hands supporting himself on a higher step, tried to get up again...

Two ladies standing right next to the guy (literally within 0.5 meters) were 'kind enough' to tell him he should use the hand rail (2.5 meters away).......How f'in helpful is that!

I went down the steps, helped the old guy to his feet and supported his climb up the steps - then ensured he was OK and stable....He seemed to get to grips with things again and thanked me profusely before walking on his way...

Where's the heart in this city??? It's certainly not in the pedestrians I see on a day to day basis!

It is indeed sad. But I'm not sure that it's much different from any other big city to be honest.

Probably right Smog - certainly anywhere I've been 'up-North' in the PRC, I see much worse to be honest! I guess most peeps are just too busy looking after #1 these days -

After yesterday's b**ch-slapping of all minibus drivers, God gently made a point:

Got onto bus after work in rain, cold and dark, struggling with brolly etc. Beeped my Octopus card and fell into only available seat, right behind the driver. About 10 mins later, someone pays her fare with a handful of coins, driver intercepts, takes $2 out and hands it to me (before dropping the rest of the coins in the collection till).

Turns out he'd forgotten to adjust the fare meter before I got on, so I had ~ without even realising ~ paid more than I needed to, and he was repaying me the extra.

I guess it says something that when the government would spend money on promoting courtesy. It says that it's lacking but they're trying to change that.

'Peeing in the street' was quite a common scene about a decade ago so let 'em take it one step at a time eh!!! It would be too radicle to rid of all the vices at once!

[Deleted due to possible legal somethigarather]

I think I'd rather get in trouble anywhere else in the world (but not China, obviously).

My experiences are quite different, I've seen a few occasions where people immediately rush to help someone in trouble (teenager falling on a bicycle in Tai Wai, old lady falling on the street in Kwun Tong) like I've seen nowhere else, especially striking difference to what happens across the border.

how do you expect locals to see anything as they have their heads down while walking into people

I read in a book on China that by helping someone and possibly saving their life, you become 'responsible' for them in some way. Or they owe you an unpayable debt of gratitude. It didn't make much sense. Just seems callous not to help when it costs you so little.
