OK so I cancelled my iCable subscription and have now received a letter telling me to return the decoder to one of their service stations otherwise they will charge me ~hk$2,000 !!!

but what happens to the socket on the wall which currently has the iCable socket in it but needs to be converted back to a std TV socket. I have tried calling iCable but as usual it's impossible to speak to anyone.

Has anyone that has been through this tell me how to get their proprietary socket removed from my wall.

Easiest way is to grab a HK$ 5.00 conversion plug at any AV/hardware store, or make a new cable yourself.

Any other option is expensive, or requires mounting of a new socket etc...

OK tks - but there is a principal in play here. iCable delivered their decoder to my house and installed their socket so surely it should be their responsibility to pick it back up and put my old socket back in.

But then again we all know that iCable are going down faster than a well known HK celebrity on another well known HK celebrity.

How stupid is that, using a proprietary socket to otherwise standard connection to "lock in" your customers. Shame on these bulk pipeline companies that try to differentiate themselves with bulls**t. One day, pipelines will be just that and nothing more.

I would agree with you, but that's no help.

In my experience, Icable will come in, remove the decoder, and leave the cables and sockets hanging.
The fact that you are then no longer able to watch even the terrestrial channels doesn't seem to be of any particular concern to them...

I went in and made a new cable for a relative last week who suffered the same problem. Cables hanging out the back, and the boys from Icable hadn't even bothered reconnecting the normal cables/plugs/sockets. The relative in question retained one Icable box in the bedroom, so is still an active customer. Makes no difference to the service level.

OK but on a practical basis they have my credit card number so can still make a charge against that. I can threaten them with any charge i like but i have no means of collecting.

Can you get a credit card company to 'block' a particular firm from making a charge against your card ?

Also they have my deposit of course.

My relative still has the 2nd decoder in the bedroom, perhaps that's why they "agreed" to pick it up.
Service still sucks, either way...

When I cancelled their service a number of years back, after 3 months of chucking faxes about back and forth, I told them they could pick it up from my house, or the swimming pool 30 stories below, their choice...
They collected it a week later

On a similar note yesterday I noticed my NOW tv bill was considerably higher than normal.

After 25 minutes of calling, being on hold and being cut off, I finally get through to customer "service" who tell me they have generously, and without telling me, upgraded my sports channel which used to cost $88 a month, to Mega Sports at $ 178 a month.

I request an immediate return to my old package to be told I am on a 18 month contract and there is a cancellation charge if I wish to change.

Following a "heated" discussion they agree to put me back on the $88 a month deal.

I imagine there will be quite a few customers stung by this new marketing trick.

c**ts the lot of them at that company run by a lieing cheating imbecile.

Which is why I don't use any of these 'services' until they are sorted out - which they won't be because LEGCO is a bunch of numbnut wasters.

If they have your credit card can't you phone up the CC company - cancel the card or the ask them to process no charges from the company in question.

Went through exactly the same deal last week, except my contract was about to expire.
After informing them that I was contemplating cancelling ALL their services (mobile, landline, netvigator,NOW and HKG Wifi), they put me back on the $88 deal....

when i moved into my new place, all the sockets in the lounge were from i-cable....

The bastards had obviously been in, removed all their equipment and in the process, had duly buggered all the connection points (they'd 'jump-cabled' inside one socket)... so I couldn't set-up my telly!!!!

In the end, I opened up the said sockets, butchered the cables where required and re-wired.....It works fine now, but even so, I was peeved that these guys just come in, butcher everything and leave...

to be, or not to be, what was the question?

We've had the same problem with HGC recently. We left our flat 6 months ago phoned and broadband and they said yes no problem please pay the remaining time on the contract. We said ok sure but send us a final bill and we'll pay. They never did and never cancelled anything and we've been phoning them every month since to try to cancel (we're not in the property anymore!). We're now getting letters threatening to sue... It's such an incredible waste of time to phone up and try to explain the same thing over and over again to the guy on the phone

up to not much

As a lawyer (albeit a trainee one) you should know that the answer is to write a registered letter to them. It's less hassle in the long run than all the phone calls.

Glad to see that the chickens are coming home to roost with these guys - profits for the iCable PayTV biz down 28%
