Various news items and TV programmes show classroom discussions about the Edison affair and how people's personal privacy is being infringed etc. etc.

Hang about. As far as I am aware, no one really knows what has happened yet. It's all speculation. Now we have kids saying that it is wrong for the computer engineer to steal the pictures and stuff. The guy hasn't even been convicted yet!

So a persons guilt and innocence is decided by the media now?

Something is very wrong here.

Well if the schools are going to teach about the issue maybe they will also say the magazines have been receiving stolen property as well? Could be an interesting topic for the kids as they debate where does the stolen property trail stop?

I know. My point is that one should apply different standards between chatroom gossip and school curriculum.

My two cents.

"So a persons guilt and innocence is decided by the media now?"

Was it ever different? Remember the case of O.J. Simpson? It's just one famous moment in the history of justice against a civil case. And there is the mess made by the big companies (tobacco, drugs, guns etc.) for which media is paid to remain silent. And this is nothing yet. See the documentary "America - from freedom to fascism" and you'll understand how small is the subject of this topic.

Sorry, I should rephase.

Should schools be teaching our children that it is ok to accept trials by media?

Schools should be encouraging students to be open minded and debate issues. This is an issue with lots of controversy and would actually be an interesting discussion if a teacher can manage to keep their beliefs out of the discussion. It would be an excellent opportunity to discuss media responsibility and accountability.

I do believe that the schools being quoted in the papers are more concerned with getting some press than they are with the issue they are discussing.

Before bickering about the sensationalist, advertising driven 'gossip and tat' for the feeble minded and easily enraged it would be better for children to be shown how in 2008 the government of Hong Kong, the supposed 'elite' that are picked mostly by Beijing are still in cahoots with the criminals that run the entertainment industry and therefore have huge influence with the police force.

Which frankly - is a bit of a worry.

SWS> Debates are good IF based on facts, not speculation. We are only teaching our kids what we do best....witch hunt.

Ah yes Gimpy - but the easily outraged public must have its lynchings....justice must be seen to be done!

If the chappy gets off on his charges, I'm sure there's a good defamation claim in there somewhere.

Anyway, as part of the fickle local mob, I'm too busy grieving over the loss of our dear Lydia.

...she was the fat f**ker with the dodgy hair wasn't she - I'd hate to be grieving over the wrong person.
