I have one of those in the UK -- they call it a debit card there -- but I didn't think they were available in Hong Kong. I'll look into that, thanks.

They did a few years ago. I guess the banks didn't get much out of it as the cardholders cannot overdraft (too much)...

Do they still charge annual subscription fees these days or are they waived?

Worth every dime. Depending in your spending habits, you may get an invitation for the Black AMEX

You can probably get your $1600 back in a form of vouchers/Discounts or otherwise stated in the application form. in the long run, you would indeed get it back if you dine out a lot

And also (correct me if I'm wrong) Amex is accepted at few places compared to Visa/Mastercard in Hong Kong or abroad.

regular promotions include triple points (and more), came to something between 2-3hkd spent = 1 star alliance mile

When SCB discontinued its Options Visa card, 'replacement' cards were sent out (these only arrived 3 weeks after a warning letter asking why I hadn't yet activated my card and it would be frozen forthwith).

Imagine my surprise to find that I had somehow magically qualified for a Platinum card. And been charged HK$1,600 for the honour.

Called the hotline and after a rather spirited debate in which I may or may not have threatened legal action for charging my account for something to which I had not agreed or signed for, I was assured I would never have to pay the annual fee. As long as I remember to call them every October to have another spirited debate with some poor sod at the hotline desk.

(Can everyone please mark their calendars to remind me in about 8 months' time? Ta.)

true, diners club would help more if you need it as a backup card, amex tends to be more expensive for vendors

I mainly use Hang Seng for savings & credit card (no annual fees). I don't really see the difference as I pay my bill on time, and don't use it all that much. It's sort of like a backup when I don't have cash on me.

How about using a Octopus Card instead?

If I could buy flights online with it, I would.

Never pay the annual fee. Phone them up and tell them if they charge the fee you are ditching their card - they always credit the fee.

Well the customer service and sales people didn't seem to realise everyone has different needs, the $1600 vouchers/discounts does me nothing good. They still keep on trying to get me to be the Platinum member and were shocked I was not pleased with all these "great" offers. I'm not planning to pay silly annaul fee for some offers I don't need.

I was offered a Platinum AmEx card and told it conferred a higher degree of esteem and respect; I told the sales bloke he must have mistaken me for someone shallower.
