Language barrier stops Briton's peace walk in France

A British peace activist aiming to walk to India to prove a money-free world is possible has turned back at the first hurdle, after getting to France and finding he needed to speak French.

Writing on his blog a month after starting his trek, 28-year-old Mark Boyle said he and two friends accompanying him ran into problems the minute they arrived in the French port of Calais.

"Not only did no one... speak the language, they also see us as just a bunch of free-loading backpackers, which is the complete opposite of what the pilgrimage is really about," he wrote.

"That really scared us, and given that we now were pretty much out of food, hadn't slept in days and were really cold, we had to reassess the whole situation.

"We spoke to a few people who were willing to talk and they said that France would not go for this unless we could speak fluent French, which none of us could."

After the setback, Mr Boyle said he was advised to head instead for neighbouring Belgium "as folk said they would be more likely to want to speak some English".

"The only trouble was the first decent-sized town in Belgium was 170 kilometres away, and all we had was three tins of soup, a bag of trail mix and a chocolate bar to sustain us," he said.

He said he had no choice but to head back to Britain.
According to his official website, Mr Boyle is walking "without any form of money because he wants his life to be his message." He had hoped to take about two and a half years to reach India.

The coordinator of the project, Dawn Tovar, denied Mr Boyle had abandoned plans for his marathon walk.

"He has not given up his project," she said.

"He is currently walking in the south-east of England. He will tour around the UK, learn French and leave again for Porbandar."

yes much safer to walk around the uk as they speak english and he wont have to be so scared............

This is a very odd story. Everybody in England learns French at school and it doesn't take much trouble to carry a small phrasebook with you. I dare say he was not very well equipped to carry out his journey.

Beer Guy, you make yourself out to be a bigger idiot with every post.

I'll give you one thing, at least you're consistent.

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open ones mouth and remove all doubt.

If this tree-hugger were to approach anyone, any nationality or language, requesting food and a place to stay because they are walking to India I think they would at best get a quizzical look and at worst get a slap.

"My name is Saoirse and I am walking from Bristol in the UK to Porbandar in India without any form of money because I want my life to be my message. We live in a media packed world, where politicians and corporations market the talk, but don't walk the walk. So one day I decided to, literally, walk the walk.

So this pilgrimage, and especially this web-site, is my attempt to freebuild communities based on love and mutual service as opposed to money and credit.

For more about the background to the pilgrimage see the Philosofree page.

In every community I have lived in, each person has something to offer. On my pilgrimage I will be offering my services in whatever way I can, but at the same time, I will depend humbly on the true hospitality of others. This, to me, is symbolic of life; it is the meeting of complete freedom and complete interdependence."

What a complete and utter tit.

Loon pants, sandals, shaved head, goatee, nice looking rucksack (bet he didn't weave that himself)...yup we got ourselves a class A waster.

Wonder what services he offers?I'd guess that he either juggles or can spare a Rizla if you've got some brown to share? The 'hospitality of others' bit means that he wants your lentils......

Aww, I feel a bit sorry for him. At least he's not sitting in a council flat on his disability/job seekers allowance, smoking and watching the racing.
