Seems all the knives are out now for him, but why should he resign, surely its up to him if he wants to spend his money on a prostitute (if that is what he actually did).

it's nobody's business except he was being known as being tough on anything illegal, including prostitution. transporting a prostitute across state line, is a federal crime. he was, after all, the state prosecutor less than 2 years ago, and came down hard to prostitution rings.
in addition, nobody knew if it was "his" money. the FBI stink started when they saw unusual transactions of money, or possibly, laudering of money, from his political campaign funds. i guess the donors didn't know they were paying him to spend it on hookers.

If he had just chosen to use his cash to pay for sex I really couldn't care less what he did - his business.
But when politicians, religious leaders or such set themselves out as 'tough on crime' and specifically they target prostitution or homosexuality and then it turns out they are using prostitutes or are closet gayers then I like to see them fall far, hard and painfully. Maybe then they'll learn to not be hypocrits.
Has this numpty yet said that with gods help and the support of his loving wife and family he'll get through this....?

I think it means that it's organized by an escort type agency - I guess the issue in the US is that once a crime crosses a state boundary it becomes a Federal offense and probably becomes extra complicated with regards tax evasion, people trafficking all all kinds of complex b*****ks,

I agree with LT and Skinny. Could not care less if someone pays for sex (athough his wife is quite hot...) but hypocrisy is a different matter.
Plus he has broken federal laws and as such cannot possibly stay in office in what is the de facto top law enforcement position in a US state. This makes his position untenable, hypocrisy or not.
